A party utopia on any given weekend, Berlin really takes things to a whole new level over the Silvester period. If you’ll be celebrating the new year in the Haupstadt for the first time things to look forward to include: a free for all on fireworks, and when I say free for all I mean EVERY SINGLE SPÄTI BECOMES A FEUERWERKE LADEN; clubs staying open for days on end; possibly a white NYE (we’re talking snow, Leute) and more tourists than usual being dicks to bouncers. The last point aside, it’s a fucking fun extravaganza and amongst too many choices and a tonne of clubs hosting multi-day, no-schlafen parties, we’ve tried to break down a few highlights across the Silvester week.
Below are some of the events we are recommending for the week (and a bit) ahead in Berlin.
***DISCLAIMER: these aren’t the only discos that are going on – they are just the ones that stand out.
Berlin’s favourite hotbed of techno and debauchery generally takes a turn for the even better (if such a thing is even possible) over NYE and 2014/2015 is no different with almost a 5-day marathon that runs right through to Monday. If ultra dancefloor marathons are your flavour, then this is your time to shine. The main affair running from the 31st – 2nd is Berghain’s Silvester which runs non-stop, over four rooms and has a flawless line-up including in traditional fashion most (all?) of their residents and favourite friends of the fam:
Anthony Parasole, Ben Klock, DJ Pete, DVS1, Function, Henning Baer, Kobosil, Discodromo, Massimiliano Pagliara, Soundstream, Tama Sumo, The Black Madonna, Virginia, Gonsher vs. Barker, Deetron, Honey Dijon, Krystal Klear, Lakuti, Margaret Dygas, nd_baumecker, Ryan Elliott, Steffi AND MORE. No joke.
Bonus extras this year include the neue, special occasion third room where the sounds will be chilled and relaxation at a high. By all accounts it was a hit during it’s debut at Berghain’s 10th Birthday earlier this month, and should be the perfect location for a Party Pause and/or cuddle puddle. Additionally if you’ve never ventured into Lab, especially if you’re a femme, then here’s your chance.
After closing briefly (we think?), Panorama Bar re-opens for the traditional first Fri of the year with Get Perlonized, feat. Zip, Sammy Dee, The Mole and Binh. Moving onto Sat/Sund, the good stuff more than continues with Die Erste Klubnacht for 2015 featuring Max Graef, Kim Ann Foxman, Leon Vynehall, DJ Tennis, Luke Slater, Ed Davenport and moreee.
If there’s ever a time to head to this Berlin stalwart by the Spree, the Silvester woche has to be it, with an offering to tempt even the most loyal Berghain-regulars. Stretching over six nachts, the action kicks off on Sunday (28th) with Flying Circus feat. Art Department, Audiofly, Martin Buttrich (live), Tiefschwarz, Butch and then some. Montag rolls in with regular night Vitamin this round hosting Miss Kittin, Anja Schneider, Sascha Braemer and more, while Tuesday looks set for a total chaos by way of this year’s most celebrated birthday boy, Sven Väth (get all over what I’m on about over here).
Papa Sven will be joined by Alejandro Mosso (live), Einzelkind und mehhrr. Still going strong, their main night affair goes full throttle Watergate with a whole host of the club’s favourites incl. Ruede Hagelstein (live), Matthias Meyer, Marco Resmann, Jimi Jules, Lee Jones, The Cheapers and loads more. After a little Pause Thursday night, that rainbow lit roof gets switched back on for the kinda epic combo of DJ Koze, Ellen Allien and Magda, joined by Ruede Hagelstein in his second appearance. Finally, Sat, Shlomi Aber, David August (live) and Marcus Worgull wind things up, with a final Silvester dance for anyone with legs left.
Looking for a reason to visit one of Berlin’s nicer looking dancefloors? This is your ticket. (And on that note, buying tickets for each nacht is highly recommended.)
Another one kicking off a couple of days before the main show, Arena Club are joining forces with HYTE (the multi-city party collective, regularly also seen in Amsterdam, Barcelona & New York), for four parties well worth writing home about. It all kicks off Montag with a pretty loud ‘Hallo, Guten Tag, wir sind hier’ featuring Carl Cox, The Martinez Brothers, Cassy, M.A.N.D.Y. and more. Backing up the next night looks equally as appealing, with Part 2 lead by Chris Liebing who will be joined by Mathew Jonson (live), Terence Fixmer, Monoloc, Alex.Do and, ja genau, more.
Kicking off just before 2015 strikes, Day 3 (Silvester) sees Adam Beyer, Gregor Tresher, Dense & Pika, Daniel Wilde and Evan Baggs see in the first hours of the New Year, followed by a small day time pause before the NYD grand finale. This last dance will feature Berlin NYD favourite Ricardo Villalobos, Dorian Paic, Tobi Neumann, Bruno Pronsato (live) & Jan Krueger. We’ve been banging on about Arena’s reincarnation for a bit now, and this Silvester week frenzy is further proof that the Kreuz/Trept outlier is back on track.
Each party is ticketed separately, details below.
Another dancefloor we’re getting giddy over this Silvestergeddon is Kreuzberg fave, Chalet. Kicking off the Silvester vibe, Tuesday sees The Mole, Mike Shannon, Youandewan, Eddie C and Ryan Mathiesen take to Vor dem Schlesischen Tor 3 for a nacht of housier flavours. The main affair from the 31st – 2nd is predictably pretty bananas and by the looks of things this one will run from midnight on NYE through to sometime on Fri. Heavy.
Appearing over those 36 or so hours will be Hunee, Lawrence, Marquis Hawkes, Serge, Alci, Barac, Ben Vedren, Giovanni Verrina and 22 or so names more. Bananas. Moving into das Wochenende, six party collectives are joining forces on Fri (White Tiles x Wanted! x Geradehaus x Studio Soulrock x Bad Animal x BTC) and you’ll be in store for sets from Baron Castle, Moon & Mann, Marius Krickow & Jonathan Ritzmann, Gratts and more. Silvester tickets available in advance (over here), for the other nights just head to the door.
(beyond clubs, yes really)
Favour celebrations away from dancefloor marathons? There are also plenty of essen and trinken related activities on hand this end of 2014, not to mention the every-Herr/Frau-for-themselves, fireworks shit show on your Straße.
For a multicultural food extravagana head to the Michelberger Hotel for ‘five fabulous food adventures’, including an Oysters & Champagne Bar, Magnus Reid’s Tuckshop Table, Jailhouse Blues Kitchen, Indian Summer of Love-In and Boozey Dessert Island (I repeat, BOOZEY DESSERT ISLAND). This one will set you back €80 and includes accompanying beer, champagne & wine (reservations over here).
For paired food and cocktails, head to Schloss Neuschweinsteiger in the heart of Neukölln where the bar will be teaming up with the chefs behind the The Future Breakfast for a four course affair. Vego (with vegan and gluten free also available), 25€ will cover the food site of things with a matched cocktail on offer for each course.
Meanwhile in Kreuzberg, Gallina (der Goldene Hahn’s bar half) are hosting a little something with “tons of wine, food, luxury, hedonism and our massive music selection”. Bottom line on that one it’s something to with der Goldene Hahn so we predict it’ll be good.
Further into the week if you’re on the Silvester recovery path, and have Friday off work our fave Friedrichshain hang, Silo, are throwing a brunch on the 2nd with London’s Neighbourhood Collective. Backing up after a cooking for the Michelberger on NYE, the Tuckshop team of Magnus Reid and Daniel Wilson will be cooking an a la carte brunch with drinks and coffee from Silo. Shoot the Silo crew an email to make a booking.
