What’s Up Weekend? MAY DAY SPECIAL

One of the highlights on our Berlin calendars, Erste Mai/May Day, ist hier! So in between chilling sekt for a boozey brunch, we’ve tried to make sense of what’s on offer and highlight some of the better parties this Tag der Arbeit (and the days either side).

Below are some of the events we are recommending for the week ahead in Berlin. Each of them is either highlighted with a:

Bron loves it! – more electronic, than not.
Lucy loves it! – more indie boy band/ pop vibes/ not techno.
Everyone loves it! – 2.5 words: shit’s ACE.

***DISCLAIMER: these aren’t the only discos that are going on – they are just the ones that stand out.

See you on the streets! XX

PANORAMA BAR – Bron loves it!

May Day Eve. The temptation is of course to stay in on this night or just partake in some casual canal drinks, pre-madness and all. It’s probably a smart move. BUT there’s a whole lot worth heading out for this mid-week abend. The crème de la crème of options (in our hand-throwing opinion), is a likely onslaught of bangin’ vibes, c/o Tiga (!!) and Matthew Dear as Audion (!!) b2bb for 5 whole Stunden. I’m excited, it’s dangerous. The night will start with Matthew Styles, with the north Americans playing 04:00 – 09:00, and Guy Gerber rounding out the show. And – if that’s not your flava, Revolting is on downstairs in lab.oratory. If you’re a femme, and you’ve never partied in the nearly-always male club, here’s your chance. Throwing your clothes into a garbage bag – optional.

HOPPETOSSE – Clockwork, Mind Against, Deadbeat – MEHR INFOS

While Tag der Arbeit has a pretty wild history in the German capital (this here was one perspective, from 2010) and there should be a handful of demonstrations to get involved in if that’s your thing, we saw no traces of violence nor a firebombed car during our 1. Mai experience last year – and instead enjoyed one of the best all day extravaganzas Berlin has to offer. Centering around Kreuzberg (predominantly Kotti to Görli), there are a shitload of parties to choose from in 2014, and plenty of bars and general swanning around the closed streets to be enjoyed in between.

Here are a few of our highlights:

HOPPETOSSE – Bron loves it!

Away from the main drag of madness, Bite Club x Hot Flush X OYE Records‘ party on board (and shore side) should be a delicious affair from 14:00 – 22:00. While the full musical line-up is yet to be revealed, we’re told there will be frozen cahaca cocktails and boozy ice lollies – so, er, yeah. Wir sind da.

ORANIENSTRASSE & SURROUNDS – Everybody loves it!

This is where you’ll find ‘MyFest’ – the 11 year old street party, originally organised by residents as a strategy against the violence that tended to kick-off in their neighbourhood on 1. Mai. There’s something for everyone here – performances and bands of all descriptions (guitars your thing? you’ll find them here), a variety of street food stalls, a lot of drunks, general mayhem and from what we recall last year, tonnes of reggae. The streets were packed. At the edge of it all, Luzia are also throwing their annual open air with a pretty tasty line-up that includes Tyree Cooper, DJ Paypal, Hrdvsion and Lando Kal amongst others. While exceptionally hard to move around, there’s no denying it’s a fun party around here and if your first May Day, would be worth checking out for at least a short stint.

SPREEWALDPLATZ – Bron loves it!

Another spot that gets pretty wild, Spreewaldplazt (just next to Görli) is good spot to return to throughout the day for easy dancing – with parties running outside, free (of course) from Locke Müller and nachbarn, BASE MENT. Locke Müller will kick off at 15:00 and throughout the day host Spencer Parker, Baaz, Retreat Soundsystem and lots more. While A Guy Called Gerald, Marion Cabretti, Christopher Breuer and moreeee will be taking over BASE MENT (start time unknown, lets’s assume 15:00?).

FARBFERNSEHER – Bron loves it!

Taking place in their garden (we think), this will be one of the trickier ones to get into as the whole space is pretty small – however if you have patience, and/or get there early, the Skalitzer Str. gem should deliver the goods (and perhaps a welcome Pause from the streets outside). Free before 11pm (they’ll be running well into the night), the line-up includes Emika, Finn Johannsen, DJ Richard and Will Lynch & Sarj.

PIC NIC 34 – It’s not a quiet day, it’s quite a day! – MEHR INFOS

ELSE – Mai Else is Your Else – MEHR INFOS

PANORAMA BAR – Bron loves it!

There’s very little that could drag me out again after the shitshow of May Day – however this right here is one. DJ Sprinkles, master of delicious strains of house, is in town and tonight plays Pbar’s Get Perlonized. Bitte schön. Terre will be joined by usual suspects Zip and Sammy Dee, with The Mole rounding things out with a live set. Looking to regain life from the day before? This might be your answer.

STATTBAD – Bron loves it!

Experienced in the art of party-making, it’s a pretty safe bet to choose  to spend your Samstag abend at a Smallville x Odd Fantastic do. This week is no different with the Boiler floor welcoming Keith Worthy (Aesthetic Audio), Phillip Lauer (Running Back) and Smallpeople (Smallville), while the smaller floor plays host to Morphosis (Morphine), Fiedel (Fiedelone) and in her Stattbad debut, Golden Pudel’s Helena Hauff. We’re also told this is part of their 9th birthday celebration – get all over that.

About BRON

Bron writes on all things techno. If there's a party at the club, she is probably there - with fiddy and all the gang. She also likes gluten free bread (because she can't eat wheat) and wine.
