What’s Up Weekend? 6 – 12 November 2014

Berliners – this is not your weekend to stay in.  From celebrations surrounding the 25 year anniversary of the fall of the Berlin wall – including an incredible 15.3km reimagining of the wall, Lichtgrenze – to a whole host of stupidly good club nights – including Grounded Theory‘s 30th Edition to which you can win tickets (!) – and a cheeky Monday night gig from Chet Faker. Something for all paces and budgets – get out there!

Below are some of the events we are recommending for the week ahead in Berlin. Each of them is either highlighted with a:

Bron loves it! – more electronic, than not.
Lucy loves it! – more indie boy band/ pop vibes/ not techno.
Everyone loves it! – 2.5 words: shit’s ACE.

***DISCLAIMER: these aren’t the only discos that are going on – they are just the ones that stand out.

CHALET – A Thursday with Mister Saturday Night – MEHR INFOS

STATTBADBron loves it!

Celebrating their 30th edition, much-loved, Berlin-bred party makers Grounded Theory return to Stattbad this Freitag – and as always this looks set to be a pretty memorable night of fine techno. On the bill for this round you’ll find the UK’s Ø [Phase] (Token), Berghain resident Answer Code Request (live), Berlin-born Moerbeck (Code Is Law), Concrete’s Antigone and making a Grounded Theory debut, Blue Hour. A pretty hefty line-up and one we think will be the perfekt start to your wochenende. For an even sweeter start? :

Thanks to the lovely Leute behind Grounded Theory we have 1 x 2 guest list spots to giveaway. Oh hihi! Keeping it einfach, to win:

1. Flick this post a like
2. Email win@lucyvstheglobe.com with Grounded Theory in the subject line before Freitag 15:00.
3. Check your emails Fri afternoon! The winner will be notified shortly after.

ARENA CLUBBron loves it!

As a club we’re (Bron’s) always looking for more excuses to visit, we (Bron) took notice when this number at Arena Club got sent our way. Coming to us from the team behind Tanzmichmal (a party series running for 6+ years), this Fretiag new series, Tough Love, makes it’s debut and looks set to be a punchy little night on Arena’s cosy dancefloor. Leading the charge is Crème Organization head honcho DJ TLR (wrap your ears around this banging taster from his set at ADE), who’ll be joined by Berceuse Heroique’s Koehler and local, Atavism’s Attila.

LICHTGRENZEEverybody loves it!

If you live, work or have travelled above ground in Kreuzberg, Friedrichshain or Mitte these past few days, you’ve probably already seen the foundations being laid for something pretty special happening this weekend. Celebrating 25 years since the fall of the Berlinermauer, Lichtgrenze (border of lights) is the work of artists Christopher and Marc Bauder  and will follow 15.3km of the former Berlin wall, reconstructed through thousands of balloons. Running through Mauerpark, Bernauerstrasse, Brandenburger Tor, Potsdamer Platz and the East Side Gallery it’s a huge feat and a very real representation of how divided the Berlin we know today once was (it will forever blow my mind that a divided Germany existed in our lifetime). At some point early Sunday evening balloon ‘patrons’ will also be releasing the balloons, with further celebrations happening around Brandenburger Tor.

Our suggestion? Grab some friends, bikes and perhaps a cheeky Weg-Bier and make an evening cycle of it. Check out a map of Lichtgrenze over here.

STATTBAD – Bron loves it!

Now this is bananas. Giving us a extremely good reason to hit Stattbad twice in one weekend, this Sat Odd Fantastic really take things to a new level with six incredible names that warrant enough excitement team solo, before throwing them in the same club on the SAME NIGHT. It’s almost too much. On the boiler floor: US-bred, Japan-based DJ Sprinkles (where to begin?! Track down this if you’re after a sampler), Future Times’ Beautiful Swimmers and White Material’s DJ Richard. Room Zwei – you’ll be treated to all the feelings c/o Giegling’s Konstantin, Mutual Dreaming’s Aurora Halal and Smallville’s Christopher Rau. About as exciting as nacht’s get – this is highly recommended.

CHALET – Bron loves it!

More milestones – and this time it’s the Geburtstagfeier of the now-Berlin based Louche, who are turning 7. It’s a pretty huge achievement in terms of party-making years and they’ll be celebrating fittingly with a 5 hour set from Detroit techno don DJ Bone (Subject Detroit). He’ll be joined by Bristol’s October (Skudge, Tanstaafl), regulars 12 x 12 (Voodoo Down Records) and Junes (Galdoors) and residents Josh Tweek & Brinsley. Prediction – vibey.

ASTRAEverybody loves it!

Another Montag, another killer gig to keep those wochenende feelings going. This round, it’s Australia’s Chet Faker, who if you’ve followed the blog for the past 18 months you’ll know we’re pretty huge fans of. His swoony, soulful thing was captured in this year’s Built on Glass and we STILL can’t get enough of it. Tonight he plays Berlin, however as is a bit of theme lately, shit’s well and truly sold out. In the spirit of never say never, let’s re-visit our last min ticket finding suggestions:

  1. Post on, refresh, hound, always-keep-open, the event page. Someone’s friend has to be too sick/out of town right?
  2. Go there early, ask around – things do happen at the last minute, maybe someone’s mate had a dodgy Döner on the weg, spare tickets can appear. Don’t be afraid to ask!
  3. Go there early, look for scalpers. Not as common in Germany, but these pricks do still exist. Bring geld.
  4. Make friends with Chet Faker and/or his band.

Viel glück! (particularly with the last one)

Bron writes on all things techno. If there's a party at the club, she is probably there - with fiddy and all the gang. She also likes gluten free bread (because she can't eat wheat) and wine.
