What’s Up Weekend? 24 – 29 January 2013

Wasssssup weekend?I have asked my mate Bron to give us a round-up of what’s going on in Berlin each week. Allowing us all to machen die Party. I’m not very techno-techno-techno – but Berlin is, and so is your mate Bron. Each event is either highlighted with a:

  1. Bron loves it! – more electronic, than not.
  2. Lucy loves it! – more indie boy band/ pop vibes/ not techno.
  3. Everyone loves it! – 2.5 words: shit’s ACE.

Here are your go-to’s for the week ahead.

**DISCLAIMER: these aren’t the only discos that are going on – they are just the ones that stand out.

BERGHAINLucy loves it! And is going…She thinks.
You wanna know what’s some dancey flavour? Spleen United and We Have Band, at the same venue. Coming to us from Denmark and London respectively – there is little more one can do, but get around them. It’s totally disco – but in the most wonderful fashion. For those of you that have never been to Berghain – this is also a really good way to see the inside of a the venue, without having to queue for ages or shit yourself when trying to sprechen Deutsch with the door.

As seems to be the way at the moment, Friday is providing a musical smorgasbord of lecker options in the German capital.

SALON ZUR WILDEN RENATE – Bron loves it! And is going (…fella’s?)
One highlight of the night goes to Berlin’s favourite twisted house party Renate which is looking pretty solid, celebrating The Mole’s latest release along with Barbara Preisinger, Baaz, Portable (live) and Johannes Albert. Always a good venue if you just want to be out and have a dash of the crazies, the sets tonight should also be consistently delicious.

WATERGATE – Bron loves it!
If losing your friends amongst a multi-roomed mess isn’t your thing (^), the Vitamin night at Watergate could be your ideal alternative. Henrik Schwarz (live), Richy Ahmed, Marcus Worgull and co – reliable players, fun should be had. You’ll probably make friends with some southern Europeans too.

COMET CLUB – Everyone loves it!
If you don’t want to machen the house or techno party, Toro Y Moi is also in town. Signifying the sound of summer and all that’s good in the world, if you don’t come skipping out of that gig full of sunshine and happiness, you have a cold, dark, -10 degree heart and no one can help you. Potentially sold out – scalp at the door.

STATTBAD – Bron loves it!
Your best bet for this evening is probably riding the ring to Wedding and jumping in the Bad with Cosmin TRG, Jerome Sydenham and Maayan Nidam. Could get hectic, in a good way.

RITTER BUTZKE – Bron loves it!
Apparat is also doing a dj-set over at Ritter Butzke. While the flyer/event name is off-putting, if his recent Boiler Room set is anything to go by this night should be full of welcome familiarity and feel-goodness.

CTM FESTIVAL – VARIOUS VENUES – Everyone loves it!
CTM Festival kicks off on Montag and runs until Sonntag, showcasing “contemporary electronic, digital and experimental music, as well as the diverse range of artistic activities in the context of sound and club cultures” (kapow).

There are a number of slightly wackier and more experimental artists (or artists getting experimental) around various venues in Berlin, with acts like Simian Mobile Disco and Skream thrown in to really prevent you from pigeon-holing the curation. One venue particularly worth checking out might be the Funkhaus Nalepastrasse, home of the DDR National Broadcasting Corporation until 1990. Whatever that means, it sounds a recycled Berlin space, and this tends to be a good thing.

For this first half of the week: Panthu du Prince & The Bell Laboratory – “an ensemble of classically trained percussionists from Oslo” (yes percussion!) – at Hau on Wednesday looks pretty aurally pleasing.

There’s lots of interesting stuff on – treat yourself to something different. More CTM recommendations to come in the next What’s Up.

About BRON

Bron writes on all things techno. If there's a party at the club, she is probably there - with fiddy and all the gang. She also likes gluten free bread (because she can't eat wheat) and wine.
