I have asked my mate Bron to give us a round-up of what’s going on in Berlin each week. Allowing us all to machen die Party. I’m not very techno-techno-techno – but Berlin is, and so is your mate Bron. However, this week we’re branching out well beyond the ring and putting Bron on a plane to Croatia – for a final summer fling of sun, beach, boats and sweet beats at Dimensions Festival.
We’ve already asked a handful of participating playas to help us break it all down and get us their top 5 artists at the festival this year. Now, we attempt to make sense of this day-by-day, stage-by-stage, sunset vantage point-by-sunset vantage point in a Whats Up Weekend Dimensions Special.
**DISCLAIMER: the following is by no means comprehensive, but it is a sample of some of the many highlights on offer this Sept 4th – 9th.
A VERY OLD AMPHITHEATRE (IN PULA)
Throwing an extra day into the mix at the start of the festival this year, Wednesday sees Dimensions branch off site and takeover a 2000 year old amphitheatre in the heart of Pula. The setting alone looks like some pretty jaw-dropping shiz, and to really seal the deal they’ve invited Bonobo (live), Mount Kimbie (live), Portico Quartet (live) and Andrew Ashong (live) along for the ride. If spine tingling moments are your thing, this could be the one.
Much like Dimensions 2012 debut, Day 1 of the festival proper kicks off in a ridiculously strong manner with hand-raising, mass elation moments written all over the Fort, Beach and Boats.
With 32 boats over 4 days you’ll hopefully end up on at least one boat party -these 3 hour cruises along the Istrian Peninsula are really where it’s at. For those able to get their shit together earlier on, a) kudos my friend and b) the Electric Minds boat at 14:00 is looking delicious with Move D, Endian and Dolan Bergin – get all over that. Alternatively reserve your sea legs for the sunset hour, with boats from both Tief (Midland, Casino Times) and Flux (Soulphiction, San Soda) embarking at 16:15 and returning three hours later, just as that mighty Croatian sun goes down. Instagram explodes!
BEACH PARTY (hosted by First World Records and Friends)
If you won’t be making it down to the harbour on day 1, the main beach is a pretty lurvly alternative, with the main beach stage hosting Andrew Ashong (17:00) and Eliphino at sunset (19:00). Embrace the pebbles, lay down your towel and soak up the seaside.
A new stage to Dimensions, it looks like the Clearing will be used as the biggest capacity stage this year. And jeezus, they’re off to a flying start with one big drawcard of the festival Juan Atkins’ Model 500 (live) along with techno heavy compadres Derrick May, Dave Clarke and Trevino.
Potentially the most dramatic stage of all, The Moat is exactly that (a moat, wahey!) and one hell of an impressive haunt to party in. Throw into the mix a mighty Hessle Takeover – Ben UFO, Karenn (live), Pearson Sound, Pangaea – and things get more than next level.
After getting busy by boat earlier in the day, Electric Minds are kicking on in Fort Arena 1, with Move D (one of Sensu’s Top Picks), Prosumer, Dixon. If 2012’s bells and whistles are back, look forward to sporadic bursts of fire shooting up around the edges of the arena. It’s perhaps Fort Punta Christo’s answer to the Pbar shutters – and good god I love a fitting shutter moment.
To enable the Dimensions massive to throw a ‘don’t you wish you were here’ into the interwebs, Boiler Room comes to Pula tonight with Space Dimension Controller (live), Move D, Rick Wilhite, Anthony Naples and Petar Dundov. If this is set up where I think it might be (atop the Fort, somewhere), the sunset backdrop should blow minds.
If techno and more techno, and then, wait, another dose of techno, is your thang, it would be well worth camping out in the Moat this eve with Resident Advisor presenting Surgeon, Mike Denhert, Dense & Pika (live) and Blawan – the man responsible for one of 2012’s Dimensions anthems.
Home to a whole lotta magic in 2012, this spot doesn’t have the ‘holy-fuck’ visual jawdrop of the Fort stages, however it’s no less appealing with perhaps a little more room to move and I wanna say, field vibes? I’m eyeing off Friday’s Leisure System takeover with Hype Williams (live), Dopplereffekt (live), Jimmy Edgar and Machinedrum.
One of the site’s smallest arenas, I’ll struggled to find this stage in 2012 – but I’ll be trying to find it and vibe it for Sensu’s and your mates Junior and Barry Price’s set tonight.
Like your samples hard and fast? This afternoon some beachside Romare could be your ticket. Grab a cocktail and ease into your Sat.
If you miss the opening concert Wed, Mount Kimbie return on Fri to make the Clearing melt. Tonight’s also your chance to catch living legend Tony Allen (as highly recommended by one of our Top Dimensions Playas, Liam) and one of my faves JETS (live).
FORT ARENA 1
With Non Plus written all over it, all signs point to Fort Arena 1 being your choice for big bangers tonight ‘ Endian, Surgeon (round 2), Skudge (live), Boddika and Martyn.
Levon Vincent, The Moat, to close. Oh ja. Having experienced the great man in the finest of sock-blowing-off form in Panorama Bar a few weeks back, I’m pretty excited about this one.
The tiniest of the stages, the Ballroom is a pretty special space and needs to be visited at least once. Accessible via the Courtyard, there’s only one way in and out, your best bet is to probably head there earlier on and camp out for a while (or as long as you can fight claustrophobia). The Flux takeover on Saturday is a pretty juicy drawcard for experiencing this teeny space, with Locked Groove, Flux residents and your mates Aartekt.
Fight the 4 day hangover, get your shit together and get on a boat. For many of us this could be the last day of Summer – which is a frightening thought. Let a boat see you out. I’m big upping Zleep at sunset with Space Dimension Controller and Martyn (16:15 – 19:15).
OUTSIDE THE FORT
You’ve made it, it’s the last leg. Shit’s been emotional – I know I’ll be talking about this for the next year. To finish off on a fittingly high note, it makes all the sense in the world to drape yourself in your finest party jacket/shirt/bodysuit and engage in an 8 hour feel good marathon with the legendary Three Chairs. That’s Rick Wilhite, Marcellus Pittman, Moodyman & Theo Parrish – all night long. I’ll be there, in a glitter jacket. Come and say hi. Let’s share a cider. This should be something special.
Keeping you guessing on the main stage, Mr. 8040 himself, Space Dimension Controller, is back after an on sea set earlier, and giving it to you live. He’s joined by Deutsch favourites Brandt Brauer Frick for your more instrumental techno flavour.
It wouldn’t be a What’s Up Weekend without a reference to Berghain… and winding up the weekend on a harder hitting note, Ostgut Ton will own The Moat this final eve with Barker, Norman Nodge, Function, Steffi and Ben Klock. Find the Berlin massive right at home.
