I have asked my mate Bron to give us a round-up of what’s going on in Berlin each week. Allowing us all to machen die Party. I’m not very techno-techno-techno – but Berlin is, and so is your mate Bron. Each event is either highlighted with a:
Bron loves it! – more electronic, than not.
Lucy loves it! – more indie boy band/ pop vibes/ not techno.
Everyone loves it! – 2.5 words: shit’s ACE.
Here are your go-to’s for the week ahead.
**DISCLAIMER: these aren’t the only discos that are going on – they are just the ones that stand out.
LIDO – Bron loves it!
Before we’ve had the chance to really recover from the bonkers of 1. Mai, Thursday throws another holiday at Deutschsland. Up for kicking this Feiertag off with a bit of a UK flavour? Something a bit less club, a bit more live? Lido tonight is your ticket – with the lovely London lyricist, Ghostpoet, in town. The great man has just released a pretty delicious new album (stream over here) and if the last time I saw him is anything to go by, should put on an impressive performance. Bonus points for on stage banter.
PRINCE CHARLES – Everybody loves it! Bron is going!
Your weekly weekend appetizer the T Room Sessions, running from 7pm to midnight, takes things to the next level this week – and goes alfresco. Run by the Sweat Lodge crew, Retrofit main man Jay Shepheard joins the 160th Session, along with Sierra Sam, Chris Wood, a BBQ and a Bucket of Rum. Meat, rum, delicious tunes and Open Air – what’s not to like?
GRETCHEN – Everybody loves it!
If you’ve read our spiel more than once you’ll know were suckers for luscious beats with a sexy undercurrent. This Friday, that want is satisfied by Ghostly International’s Shigeto and friends in the form of Fantastic Mr. Fox and Adrian Sherwood. Who knows what direction this will go in – the Shigeto live experience can include drums (!) – but regardless, if it even marginally samples 2012’s pretty lovely Lineage you’ll surely be taken into a state of bliss.
Columbiahalle – Everybody loves it! Nobody managed tickets.
In a year full of ridiculously anticipated returns, The Knife’s album release and coinciding tour, aroused a whole lot of mass hysteria. Saturday, Berlin gets its round and given the enormity of this, tonight’s affair is obviously sold out. Your options if, like us, you hesitated and tickets disappeared before your eyes… A) Give up a large chunk of your monthly salary and visit one of your scalping old mates out the front. Get your South-East Asian barter on. B) Join us at Melt, 19 – 21 July, where the Dreijers will treat Ferropolis and 20,000 or so happy punters. Where there’s a will, there’s way, etc.
BERGHAIN – Bron loves it!
An insatiable hunger for hours and hours of big techno bangers? A predictable but no less satisfying answer – this Samstag in Berghain, with the extra drawcard this week being a Klockworks showcase. Ben Klock leads Trevino, DVS1, Mike Huckaby and ROD in a moreish marathon downstairs, meanwhile on the slightly lighter side in Pbar Tama Sumo is joined by a Belgian invasion via FCL, San Soda and Red D. As Sonntag abends rolls on Cassy and Boris do their thing.
RUMMELSBURG – Bron loves it!
After a pretty bullshit five months of suffering in the long freeze, the sun has well and truly returned and with our long lost friend comes what Berlin does best – Open Air after Open Air. They’re popping up – everywhere – and I can’t wait to jump all over the daytime, so-damn-happy-to-be-here vibe. This Sunday’s offering comes via the Stil vor Talent crew and a number of locally familiar names Oliver Koletzki, Sascha Braemer, HVOB, Robosonic, Kellerkind, Niko Schwind, und viel mehr. Hell, it’s also on a ‘beach’. Hey Sommer!
