What’s Up Weekend? 31 October – 6 November 2013

What's Up Weekend? Anything?

I have asked my mate Bron to give us a round-up of what’s going on in Berlin each week. Allowing us all to machen die Party. I’m not very techno-techno-techno – but Berlin is, and so is your mate Bron. Each event is either highlighted with a:

Bron loves it! – more electronic, than not.
Lucy loves it! – more indie boy band/ pop vibes/ not techno.
Everyone loves it! – 2.5 words: shit’s ACE.

We have moved What’s Up Weekend to Thursday, as all this weekend disco really puts us on the back foot for a Wednesday deadline. So here are your go-to’s for the week ahead.

**DISCLAIMER: these aren’t the only discos that are going on – they are just the ones that stand out.

STATTBAD – Bron loves it!

Those Leute at Stattbad are at it again, and this Sat they’ll be hosting Smallville and Odd Fantastic, for a fine night of dancing and the throwing of hands in the air. On the menu are Anton Zap , Benjamin Brunn (live), Christopher Rau, SmallpeopleJohn Heckle, Huerco S and Juniper, which probably means a nice mixed bag of various strains of house. This should be good. Go North.

TRESOR – Bron loves it!

Our friends at Sweat Lodge are at Tresor this eve and amongst other things will be showing off Washerman’s recently released LP, Raw Poet. The Swissman will be joining Chymera (live) (Kompakt, Ovum), The Drifter (Permanent Vacation) and Elie Eidelman (JackOff, Sweatlodge) with a takeover of Globus (that’s the upstairs less-lasered floor). Downstairs things will likely be heavier with Nicole Moudaber (Drumcode/ UK), Chemie (Affin, Dynamic Reflection/ IT) and Get Serious (Restructured Records/ Berlin).

Diverting attention back away from a Berghain app and all that surrounding mass hysteria, is tonight’s first Sheworks (Works the Long Nights) takeover of Berghain. And attention-grabber it should be – shit’s looking ridiculous on the main floor with Sigha, Midland, Fiedel, Pangaea, Surgeon, Sunil Sharpe, Henning Baer and label heads Blawan & Pariah (also performing as Karenn (live)). Pretty much a year to the day we saw Karenn make their Berghain debut – and if that, plus their more recent German sunrise pounding at Melt are any indication, we should be in for a relentless treat. Pbar highlights include John Daly (live) and Oliver Deutschmann, along with a Sonntag Ovum takeover from Josh Wink, Radio Slave, André Galluzzi and co. So much bang for your buck (€).

MAX-SCHMELLING-HALLE – Everybody loves it (well, really just Bron, but this sure ain’t techno)

Not that long ago my listening habits were split far more evenly across electronic and indie music. Then Berlin happened, I mostly dropped the guitars, I’m ok with that. However, tonight I’m pretty excited for an alternative blast from the past with Ohio’s The National in town to get their emotional stir on. Touring this year’s Trouble Will Find Me and with a bonkers back catalogue of goodness, this should be a delicious showcase of stuff both old and new (if you’re out there Mr. Berninger – do us a solid and include Mr. November?). It’s also worth mentioning that this is all taking place in that giant sports hall next to Mauerpark – if you’re feeling a grand stadium show vibe. Unclear whether tickets are still available, give it a crack.

VARIOUS VENUES – BERMUDA – Everybody loves it!

Kicking off on Wednesday and continuing until Sunday 10th, BerMuDa will be offering a jam packed day and night program of all sorts of electronic flavours in various venues around Berlin. It’s so hectic it’ll have it’s own post. Watch this space.

About BRON

Bron writes on all things techno. If there's a party at the club, she is probably there - with fiddy and all the gang. She also likes gluten free bread (because she can't eat wheat) and wine.
