I have asked my mate Bron to give us a round-up of what’s going on in Berlin each week. Allowing us all to machen die Party. I’m not very techno-techno-techno – but Berlin is, and so is your mate Bron. Each event is either highlighted with a:
- Bron loves it! – more electronic, than not.
- Lucy loves it! – more indie boy band/ pop vibes/ not techno.
- Everyone loves it! – 2.5 words: shit’s ACE.
Here are your go-to’s for the week ahead.
**DISCLAIMER: these aren’t the only discos that are going on – they are just the ones that stand out.
BERGHAIN – Bron loves it!
If you want to make the most of CTM’s interesting experimental offerings, heading to Berghain this eve would be a decent choice, with Kuedo, Holly Herndon, Forest Swords and D’eon all showcasing their left-of-centre thang.
PRINCE CHARLES – Bron loves it! And is going.
Meanwhile, over at PC the T-Room Sessions host Boris, DJ Spider and Discodromo. This weekly weekend warm-up is a pretty ideal way to ease into the weekend – no entry, tasty beverages and home cooked fare. Last week involved ginormous servings of minced lamb & vegetable stew – if there’s even a remote chance of this happening again this Freitag – Ich bin da.
HUXLEY’S NEUE WELT – Everyone loves it! And no-one’s going because it’s sold out (!)
Away from clubs, shit’s going to get real/sexy over by the Hasenheide with (pause for effect)……KENDRICK LAMAR. Far more organised Berliners have snapped up tickets to this now sold out prime offering, so get down early, prep your best Deutsch bartering lingo and scalp your way in. Well worth the effort, this will obviously be epic.
BERGHAIN/ PANORAMA BAR – Bron loves it! And is going.
Pick of the week goes to the mayhem that will be unleashed in Berghain and Panorama Bar. Downstairs in Berghain ‘Rave Undead’ has been dubbed a tribute to the golden days of early 90s rave, hosting Shed, Andy Stott, Mark Archer (of Altern-8!!!!), Powell, EVOL and Samuel Kerridge. Upstairs Pbar’s Get Perlonized takes things to the next level – DJ Sprinkles, Shackleton, Zip, Sammy Dee. It’s a festival within a festival, lose yourself!
BERGHAIN KANTINE – Bron loves it! And is going.
Meanwhile, more CTM goodies going on next door in Berghain Kantine. In an ideal scenario there’s some sort of tunnel (or perhaps a door) that links the two venues, allowing a three-roomed extravaganza of epic proportions. Accepting that’s unlikely, the Kantine alone is looking rather solid with what appears to be some sort of all-in b2b2b2b thing going on between Machinedrum, Kode9, Lando Kal and friends, and other performances, including Laurel Halo, Tim Exile and Science Fiction Children who have created a “robotic, full-sized 808 drum machine”. I’m intrigued.
STATTBAD – Bron loves it! (and Lucy might be going.. Go figure.)
There must be something for Jedermann in Wedding’s key attraction this evening. Winding up CTM, three ‘rooms’ play host to a smorgasboard of variety from the mass-elation kinda vibe of Simian Mobile Disco and Skream in room 1, to what must be slightly wackier and unpredictable in rooms 2 and 3 c/o the Purge and #gHasgtag parties (try and make sense of the CTM listing). Make sure you check out Alec Empire – if his set is anything like last week’s Boiler Room appearance, you’ll be annihilated, in a good way.
GRETCHEN – Bron loves it!
Post-CTM the delights continue, with Darkstar at Gretchen. Showcasing their new album News From Nowhere (released Monday, but available to stream over on Pitchfork), a follow-up to the pretty brilliant North. Expect a bit of alles – the dubsteppy sounds of North x something in the realm of Animal Collective from their latest. If I go, I’ll be the one off to the side melting to Aidy’s Girl.
