What’s Up Weekend? 3 – 9 October 2013

What's up Weekend?

I have asked my mate Bron to give us a round-up of what’s going on in Berlin each week. Allowing us all to machen die Party. I’m not very techno-techno-techno – but Berlin is, and so is your mate Bron. Each event is either highlighted with a:

Bron loves it! – more electronic, than not.
Lucy loves it! – more indie boy band/ pop vibes/ not techno.
Everyone loves it! – 2.5 words: shit’s ACE.

We have moved What’s Up Weekend to Thursday, as all this weekend disco really puts us on the back foot for a Wednesday deadline. So here are your go-to’s for the week ahead.

**DISCLAIMER: these aren’t the only discos that are going on – they are just the ones that stand out.

BASE MENTLucy loves it!

Looking to get your lives around some Icelandic/ Scandinavian/ general cool flavour? You need to get to BASE MENT. Möller Records is throwing a party with all things that resemble Icelandic electronic vibes. Futuregrapher is taking over all of our ear waves and bringing you a ton of production feelings. Top 5 best thing about it, after all those Scandinavian babes you are going to see in and around this Kreuzberg venue? It’s free, all you have to do is email our mates over at Nordic By Nature: guestlist@nbnberlin.de

STATTBAD – Bron loves it! Quite possibly going!

Berlin party makers Grounded Theory return to Stattbad tonight for their 24th edition and bring with them a heap of tricks up their sleeve. Tricks in the form of Hessle Audio’s Pangaea, along with more locally based flavours A Guy Called Gerald (live) (25 Years Of Independence), Tommy Four Seven (CLR, These Hidden Hands), Henning Baer (Grounded Theory, K209) and Barker (Ostgut Ton, Leisure System). Big bangers on the north side.

It’s a double whammy tonight at Berghain and Pbar, with the main floor hosting Polymorphism #8 and Pbar the once monthly Get Perlonized. Polymorphism – a series of concerts run by the crew behind CTM – once again has a pretty eclectic offering this eight edition, lead by Oneohtrix Point Never who’s latest full length was released this week. (Get your ears around that if you haven’t already). He’s joined by Stellar OM Source, Ital, Kobosil, Moon Wheel and Lorenzo Senni. Upstairs, and operating at normal Pbar hours, get your fix from ZipSoulphiction aka Jackmate, Sammy Dee and Sonja Moonear.

PRINCE CHARLES – Everybody loves it! Everybody is going (we think?)

With a title like BURGERS AND HIP HOP and the tagline “wave your buns in the air like you just don’t care”, you just know you’re in for a treat, right? This is one of the cooler events I’ve seen thrown into the Berlinersphere of late and, er… how has no one thought about marrying these two before?! Kicking off at 5pm, Prince Charles and nachbarn, TAK Theatre (under cover to protect you against shite weather), will be the setting for a variety of ganz lecker street eats as well as DJs with a penchant for hip hop. For your tastebuds vendors include Big Stuff Smoked BBQ, Kimchi Princess, M&G’s Ribroll, Bao Kitchen, Mogg & Melzer und viel mehr. And for your ears: DJs J, Micki, & Max Buschfeld and Porto bello will be throwing more Biggie Smalls, NAS, Pharcyde, Kanye, Missy and co at you than you can handle. Rumour has it EastCoast V WestCoast cocktails will also be on the menu. I’ll be sipping for the West Coast because, you know, South Central does it like nobody does.

GRETCHEN – Bron loves it!

Primarily nailing sounds of a bass and beats flavour, Gretchen have really made a mark in showcasing artists outside of house and techno in Berlin. Tonight they celebrate 2 years of doing what they do, and their birthday bill is a fittingly familiar mix. Along for the ride are Kutmah (Brainfeeder/Hit+Run), Robot Koch (Project: Mooncircle), a guy getting a lot of air time in my headphones of late – DjRUM (2ndDrop), KRTS (Project: Mooncircle), Delfonic (Oye Records), Soulmind (Joint Breaks) and bloody loads more. Party hats encouraged.

://ABOUT BLANK – Bron loves it!

Throwing even more UK bass into your wochenende (gimme, gimme, gimme), and rounding out the Hessle Audio crew in Berlin this week, Pearson Sound takes to ://about blank this Samstag. If you like reassurance that you’re in for a great set, this is the one. He’ll be joined by fellow countryman, Kowton (Livity Sound) and some more local house and techno flavours – Traversable Wormhole (clr / traversable wormhole records), Manhooker (live) (unterton), Johanna Knutsson (klase recordings), Reka (tresor) and viel mehr. Tip? Dress wearing less – this club seems to get extra sweattyyyyy.

BERGHAIN KANTINE – Bron loves it! Is going!

Coinciding with with the release of their debut full-length, Psychic, Darkside – that’s Nicolas Jaar and Dave Harrington – are doing a wee Euro tour and this Dienstag it’s the DE Haupstadt’s turn. The association with the master that is Nico Jaar alone could be enough to jump on the Darkside thang, however to really seal the deal, wrap your ears around this stream of Psychic over here. It’s damn delicious, all sorts of smooth. You should also check out or their full album re-work of Daft Punk’s Random Access Memories. Presale tickets have sold out, but word is there are 50 going at the door. Get down early, and lock that shit in.

About BRON

Bron writes on all things techno. If there's a party at the club, she is probably there - with fiddy and all the gang. She also likes gluten free bread (because she can't eat wheat) and wine.
