I have asked my mate Bron to give us a round-up of what’s going on in Berlin each week. Allowing us all to machen die Party. I’m not very techno-techno-techno – but Berlin is, and so is your mate Bron. Each event is either highlighted with a:
Bron loves it! – more electronic, than not.
Lucy loves it! – more indie boy band/ pop vibes/ not techno.
Everyone loves it! – 2.5 words: shit’s ACE.
Here are your go-to’s for the week ahead.
**DISCLAIMER: these aren’t the only discos that are going on – they are just the ones that stand out.
FARBFERNSEHER – Bron loves it!
If you’re not still nursing a sore head/broken body following the extended Feiertag weekend just past, this is a bit of a mid-week treat. Poles Catz ‘N Dogz and Retrofit main man Jay Shepheard break up the short week with feel good house vibes in an extremely intimate setting.
KANTINE AM BERGHAIN – Lucy loves it! (Bron probably also loves it..)
Wednesday is probably one of the least sexy days of the week, but if you feel like getting down to some pretty solid baby making beats Berghain is your best bet tonight. Inc. is doing their thing, and if Lucy wasn’t such a lazy fucker she would probably head over to fly the flag proudly. We are blaming the weather – when will winter actually be over?
GRETCHEN – Everyone loves it!
Whoever’s responsible for Gretchen’s bookings deserves a shout out – they’ve nailed their thing. For low, sexy, hip-hop-cross-soft electronic vibes, c/o whoever’s currently touring a release of that flavour, there really isn’t another Berlin option. Tonight, delicious comes from Brainfeeder’s Lapalux, who off the back of the rather heavenly Nostalchic is in town. Get all over it/him.
DENOVALI SWINGFEST – Bron loves it!
For something different, I’d check out the first Berlin edition of Denovali Swingfest, a 2 day affair put together by the team behind the Essen-based Denovali Records, who have run the Swingfest in their home town the last few years. The mini fest takes place over Friday and Saturday at two pretty special venues for music of Denovali’s kind – Passionskirche (an impressive church in the Bergmannkiez of Kreuzberg) and Radialsystem V (a former water pumping station on the Spree). Denovali’s kind? More experimental electronic artists with the Berlin debut hosting Ulrich Schnauss, Tim Hecker, Kilimanjaro Darkjazz Ensemble, and Hidden Orchestra among others. This is your more chilled music appreciation pick of the week.
STATTBAD – Bron loves it! And is going! (Sekt auf Eis, right side of the deep end)
What in the weird, I’m excited about this one – DJ Koze, Isolee, Ikonika and Duke Dumont take to the pool tonight for something for alles. I’d be bluffing to predict the journey Koze will take us on – but more informed commentators, one brilliant new release and this little gem are pointing towards a fun, genre-hopping ride. Joined by the kinda lovely Isolee, Hyperdub’s Ikonika, and the Giver (sometimes Streetwalker) himself Duke Dumont, this should be varied, epic and heaving. Get there in good time.
FESTSAAL KREUZBERG – Lucy loves it! and is pretty sure she’ll go.
It’s all about the Scandinavian indie disco at Festsaal Kreuzberg this Saturday PM. With Urban Cone, Young Dreams and YAST all playing – it’s the sounds of summer right there with Swedish/ Norwegian subtitles… And let’s be honest, nothing quite beats a good bit of summer sounding goodness (with Scandinavian’esque subtitles).. Actually, rephrase – nothing quite beats a good old Scandinavian affair. Babes galore. Amen.
SALON ZUR WILDEN RENATE – Bron loves it!
I’m admittedly a little out of touch with what’s going on back home (home being Australia). It’s been nearly 3 years and it’s just so damn far away (yes, I’ve heard of the internet). But Tornado Wallace (the man formerly known as Lewie Day) is one of those names that continually pops up on an international scale and for good reason too. A TW mix is a delicious mix, and he makes a sweet housey disco track too. Old mate is obviously in town and Sat night plays Berlin’s best multi-roomed shit show (a shit show – in a good way) (could I have some more parantheses) along with fine company in the form of Lexx, who you should get acquainted with via this disco mix.
BERGHAIN/ PANORAMA BAR – Bron loves it!
Samstag sees the launch of Hotflush’s label night at Panorama Bar with Scuba, Recondite (live), George FitzGerald and Locked Groove bringing their ever-good thing to the mecca’s smaller floor. Downstairs – banging techno – with Speedy J and his Electric Deluxe takeover (feat. Giorgio Gigli and resident Norman Nodge) providing double figure hours worth of quality intensity. Back upstairs, Sunday afternoon hosts the vey finest femmes, with Cassy, Dinky and Kate Simko. A delicious affair at Berghain/Pbar, wie immer.
