What’s Up Weekend? 29 August – 4 September 2013

What's up Weekend

I have asked my mate Bron to give us a round-up of what’s going on in Berlin each week. Allowing us all to machen die Party. I’m not very techno-techno-techno – but Berlin is, and so is your mate Bron. Each event is either highlighted with a:

Bron loves it! – more electronic, than not.
Lucy loves it! – more indie boy band/ pop vibes/ not techno.
Everyone loves it! – 2.5 words: shit’s ACE.

We have moved What’s Up Weekend to Thursday, as all this weekend disco really puts us on the back foot for a Wednesday deadline. So here are your go-to’s for the week ahead.

**DISCLAIMER: these aren’t the only discos that are going on – they are just the ones that stand out.

XXXX n.n. – Bron loves it!

I still can’t quite figure out if this is there genuine venue name or a TBA placeholder – but let’s not get caught up on the little things. This little ramshackle number next to CDV has got ideal weekend starter inside/outside vibes written all over it and could be well worth checking out this Freitag.  The deal maker is a release party from Brandt Brauer Frick‘s label, The Gym, with their latest label compilation Muscle Tuff out next week. The main men will be there, and are joined by Max Graef (Box Aus Holz, The Gym), Muff Deep (Tartelet, The Gym) and Nano Nansen (Get Deep, The Gym). If that’s not enough, you could also get all over pre-vibes at OYE Records from 6pm. Work it? Showing myself the door.

TORSTRASSEN FESTIVAL – Everybody loves it! Everybody is going!

If you’re up to date with all things Lucy vs. The Globe you’ll know that over the past two weeks Lucy has been introducing us to Torstrassen Festival via a classic Lucy Q&A with some of the key acts performing at said festival. We’ve learnt a lot (and I still don’t know whether I’d rather fight 100 duck sized horses, or 1 horse sized duck), and finally this Samstag, you get to see these artists along with a whole host of other talent at this one day local fest. Taking over various locations on and around Torstrasse, one ticket will get you into all venues throughout the day and – if this isn’t a glitch on the site or 16 hours in front of a Macbook getting to meinen Augen – these bad boy are only €12. Wassss??!

With lots of delicious choice, I’m throwing my picks in the direction of Robot Koch (17:00, St. Oberholz), Boska (20:00, CCCP), Awesome Tapes from Africa (23:00, Ackerstadtpalast) and Gregor Schwellenbach spielt 20 Jahre Kompakt (21:00, Volksbühne Parkettfoyer) – that’s an interpretation of 20 years of Kompakt classics as chamber music (kinda cool, huh?) Lucy’s vibe? The/Das (21:00, St. Oberholz) , Thomas Azier (19:30, White Trash Fast Food) and 케이프 (Cape) (14:00, cccp). Block out your Saturday, grab a wristband and enjoy a leisurely afternoon of prime tunes along the Mitte/Pberg border.

STATTBAD – Bron loves it!

After a brief summer hiatus, Stattbad reopened it’s doors last weekend and is now back in full swing, providing you with good reason to ride the ring to Wedding. This week, it’s quite the affair, as they’re hosting the launch party for Red Bull Music Academy Radio Berlin’s month-long live broadcast, which will be coming from Kreuzberg. Throwing all sorts of flavours into the mix, there’s etwas für alles this Samstag, with Robag Wruhme (apparently in his only Berlin gig for the year), UK bass heavyweight Oneman, fancy footworkin DJ Rashad & DJ Spinn,Running Back’s Tiger & Woods (live), techno heavy James Ruskin, Uncanny Valley’s Jacob Korn (live), 50Weapons’ Doc Daneeka and apparently even more TBA. Ausgezeichnet.

KIEKEBUSH – Bron loves it! Is going (mit Fahhrad)

I nearly fell of my chair when the line-up for this one was sent my way. This final Wax Treatment open air for summer has been pencilled in for a while however for quite some time had a lingering TBA. Then (as far as I can tell), around 3 weeks ago Theo Parrish (THEO PARRISH) was quietly slipped onto the bill. Hence the falling-off-the-chair scenario. Woahwee. This should be nothing short of special. The one and only great man joins a Berlin favourite in the form of Wax Treatment, who are winding up their KILLASAN sound system’s al fresco season with this final lakeside open air. Returning to the same setting as their previous editions, they’re taking over a small lake and beach in the middle of no man’s farmland in Brandenburg. Theo is joined by locals Fiedel, Mark Ernestus and natürlich, Wax Treatment residents. And if you’re feeling adventurous, there’s a lovely 7km ride from s-bahn Zeuthen to the site which on a fine late summer’s day could be the icing on the Kuchen. Sunday best and a likely bliss overload.

GRIESSMUEHLE – Bron loves it!

More reasons to get busy on an open air dfloor this wochenende, you say? Ja bitte. Whether we want to face it or not, Sommer’s drawing to a close so it makes all the sense in the world to soak up every last ray and party in the wide open (or at the very least a club garten). Your more local option this Sonntag comes via a conglomerate of Berlin party makers – Geradehaus, Pueblo and Passion Beat – who are joining forces to form Gerade Pueblo Passion at Sonnenallee outlier Griessmühle. Keeping it in the fam, tunes will be provided by Baikal, The Drifter, Jack Haighton, JMII, Moon & Mann, Sarj, and Will Lynch.

About BRON

Bron writes on all things techno. If there's a party at the club, she is probably there - with fiddy and all the gang. She also likes gluten free bread (because she can't eat wheat) and wine.
