I have asked my mate Bron to give us a round-up of what’s going on in Berlin each week. Allowing us all to machen die Party. I’m not very techno-techno-techno – but Berlin is, and so is your mate Bron. Each event is either highlighted with a:
Bron loves it! – more electronic, than not.
Lucy loves it! – more indie boy band/ pop vibes/ not techno.
Everyone loves it! – 2.5 words: shit’s ACE.
We have moved What’s Up Weekend to Thursday, as all this weekend disco really puts us on the back foot for a Wednesday deadline. So here are your go-to’s for the week ahead.
**DISCLAIMER: these aren’t the only discos that are going on – they are just the ones that stand out.
FLUX BAU – Everybody loves it!
DROP EVERYTHING – the Blog Party is back, and with support from the great man (Bruce, yeahhhh), I wanna say, bigger than EVER? Lucy vs. the Globe is joining forces with 4 of the best – Nordic by Nature, PonyDanceClyde, überlin and Demons Galore – to bring you round 3 of hip hop / r n b madness that sees FluxBau drop it like it’s hot, for 6+ Stunden. In a city swimming in house and techno, sometimes we all need a electronic Pause to break it down, get low, grind and unanimously agree that Missy has never made a bad track.
AND if you’re reading this before Thurs 2PM, you can also win FREE TICKETS – over here. Are you ready, for this jelly?
BERGHAIN/PANORAMA BAR – Bron loves it!
There’s a lot going on at Am Wriezener Bahnhof dieses wochenende, and it kicks off tonight with Not Equal taking over Berghain, and a Mojuba Nacht upstairs. Things are likely to get pretty heavy on the main floor with an industrial/metal annihilation on the cards from Godflesh – in their first Berlin appearance since 1999. HEAVY. They’re joined by Tommy Four Seven’s experimental techno project – These Hidden Hands (also live, also likely heavy-hitting), Pharmakon, Shapednoise, Bleaching Agent, AnD, resident Opium Hum and Hamburg’s Helena Hauff. Upstairs – dancing, with Gerd Janson, Jovonn, Sirko Müller (live) and Mojuba boss, Don Williams. Tickets available for Not Equal in advance, and I’m about 90% sure entry to downstairs will also get you into Pbar, but not vice versa (correct me if I’m wrong, bitte).
CHESTERS – Bron loves it!
Local fun makers Odd Fantastic are getting all over Chesters for the first time this eve and are bringing with them Cômeme/Magazine party-inducing don, Barnt. He’s joined by fellow Deutscher and Robert-Johnson resident Even Tuell. Amongst a jam-packed Freitag this would be your pick if you’re looking for a playful house & techno blend, in an intimate space with a local crowd.
PANORAMA BAR – Bron loves it!
As stoked as I am about getting outta town for 4-day east German adventure (we’re off to Dresden & Leipzig, oh hihi), I’m also pretttttty shattered to miss this one. Sometime on Sunday, James Holden will be making his first Berlin appearance since mid last year (Nation of Gondwana – if that counts?), and I think it’s safe to assume Pbar will be full of Menschen, collectively losing their shit. The Border Community main man will be joined by Nick Höppner and Staffan Lindberg, with Prins Thomas, Margaret Dygas and Joakim & Kindness as Everything flying the Samstag flag. Downstairs in Berghain – separate entry for FC Snax. Shit’s going to be heaving.
COOKIES / DRAYTON BAR – Bron loves it!
It’s Saturday nacht – why not don your glad rags and head to Cookies/Drayton Bar, where you’ll be able to combine the joys of an epic cocktail with the Berlin debut from Glaswegian up and comers Atom Tree. Performing live as a three-piece, they’ll be showing off their new EP Tide of Thorns, which was released last month and has a soft electronic buzz that I’m really enjoying. These kids are pretty fresh and delicious, shake things up and head to Mitte. Doors at 22:00, concert from 23:00.
