What’s Up Weekend? 27 February – 6 March 2013

What it is Weekend?I have asked my mate Bron to give us a round-up of what’s going on in Berlin each week. Allowing us all to machen die Party. I’m not very techno-techno-techno – but Berlin is, and so is your mate Bron. Each event is either highlighted with a:

  1. Bron loves it! – more electronic, than not.
  2. Lucy loves it! – more indie boy band/ pop vibes/ not techno.
  3. Everyone loves it! – 2.5 words: shit’s ACE.

Here are your go-to’s for the week ahead.

**DISCLAIMER: these aren’t the only discos that are going on – they are just the ones that stand out.

PRINCE CHARLES Everyone loves it, everyone is going!

Kick off your weekend one day early with one hell of a deliciously curated offering at Prince Charles this Thurs. Kyson, Sun Glitters and Julien Mier are heading up the first edition of Momentum, and the night promises to bring summery, dreamy, electronic vibes with perhaps a bit of a hip-hop slant. AND if you’re reading this pre-Wednesday 7pm, you could treat your ears (and a friends), for free. Head over here for full details on how to win.

STATTBADEveryone loves it!

We’re running out of reasons to not go to Stattbad on the weekly, with Wedding’s drawcard this week throwing a 360˚ audio-visual extravaganza at us, in the form of Subkultur, a live installation of key 1980s concerts filmed in West-Berlin. Captured by long-standing label, !K7, the night promises both visual and aural treats in the form of VJ Mox, DJs Maria Zastrow and Mark Reeder, and rare footage (of artists like Einsturzende Neubauten, Nick Cave, Crime and The City, Solution, Shark Vegas and more) . Think: epic flashback in an empty swimming pool.  Launching tonight, it also runs on Freitag.

FESTSAAL KREUZBERGEveryone loves it, everyone is going!

OK – So this week we have a whole heap of indie delicious by way of Germany and Denmark. Rangleklods, DEKO DEKO and Rough Days for Diamond Trade are all playing under the one roof this Friday, and Lucy is excited. Even if you DON’T vibe the whole Scandinavian indie music vibe – the one this you can always get around is the crowd – baben. So, come find a part-time boyfriend/ girlfriend – and listen to some pretty cool music from the European regions of the globe.

BERGHAIN/ PANORAMA BAR Bron loves it and could quite possibly be going (persuade her?)!

Upon first listen of Function’s upcoming (LONG awaited) first solo album, Incubation (coming March 4th), a friend with pretty spot-on taste suggested ‘this could very well be one of the best techno albums I’ve heard’. Exaggeration or not, this Saturday in Berghain promises one hell of classy display in fine, all-encompassing techno c/o Function (and this release launch), Surgeon, Silent Servant, Svreca, and friends. Meanwhile in PBar, reliable feel-good Norwegian Todd Terje will provide an escape from the intensity below, joined by Soundstream, Bill Patrick and later on Sonntags – the great lady herself, Ellen Allien. You might need to take Monday off.

MINDPIRATES VEREINSHEIMBron loves it! Lucy has no idea?

In a week of breaking out beyond the standard Friday and Saturday agenda, comes another event worthy of mixing up routine, and even better, this gem is FREI. Taking place at Mindpirates Vereinsheim – a reconstructed mill on the banks of the spree (a venue I keep being told is well worth checking out alone) -, Contort #5 is offering us a slightly more chilled Sunday session (kicking off at midday) of experimental leanings. With Cristian Vogel, Bill Kouligas, Shapednoise and Samuel Kerridge taking control – this would be your ticket if you feel like an aurally pleasing, electronic Sonntag, minus the impact of the Friedrichshain heavyweight up the road.

MONARCH – Lucy loves it! and is going!

Frida Hynvönen is the act du jour, she is known as an enchanting stage performer and comedienne, a stormy piano player and brilliant lyricist, this one is  a unique voice speaking from a timeless inner place. And she shouldn’t be missed. Posting about it a week early as it’s FREE with an RSVP. Simply sign up to the Nordic by Nature newsletter through a swift email to guestlist@nbnberlin.de, and you are golden!

About BRON

Bron writes on all things techno. If there's a party at the club, she is probably there - with fiddy and all the gang. She also likes gluten free bread (because she can't eat wheat) and wine.
