What’s Up Weekend? 26 September – 2 October 2013

What's Up Weekend? Anything?I have asked my mate Bron to give us a round-up of what’s going on in Berlin each week. Allowing us all to machen die Party. I’m not very techno-techno-techno – but Berlin is, and so is your mate Bron. Each event is either highlighted with a:

Bron loves it! – more electronic, than not.
Lucy loves it! – more indie boy band/ pop vibes/ not techno.
Everyone loves it! – 2.5 words: shit’s ACE.

We have moved What’s Up Weekend to Thursday, as all this weekend disco really puts us on the back foot for a Wednesday deadline. So here are your go-to’s for the week ahead.

**DISCLAIMER: these aren’t the only discos that are going on – they are just the ones that stand out.

FREUDENREICH – Bron loves it! Is going!

After a successful debut, where I’m told shit got hectic (in a really good way), SPACEMOUNTAIN returns this Samstag to Freudenreich, one of Berlin’s more intriguing venues. With promise of all sorts of desirable genre-hopping (I’ll be holding them to the space rave horn) this second edition should once again fit perfectly into the basement of Sonnenallee 67, with it’s hidden Absinth bar and giant d-floor tree. Your selectors for this round? Claire Morgan, Killian, and hosts Heavy Breather & Grumble. In short I’m predicting: a cosy friends of friends vibe, wind in the willows in a nebular style. This should be fun.

No surprises here – this is a big one, and if a classic Berghain night is on your mind, here’s your ticket. Ben Klock’s Klockworks faces off against Luke Slater’s Mote Evolver for hours and hours of heavy hitting on the main floor. That’ll include Ben Klock (klockworks), DVS1 (klockworks), Luke Slater (mote evolver), Lucy (mote evolver) and Ryan Elliott (klockworks). Providing relief from the pounding downstairs, Pbar’s also looking ganz lecker with Mister Saturday Night, Pittsburgh Track Authority (work them records), Kim Ann Foxman (need want records),  The Mole (maybe tomorrow), und viel mehr. Ein klasse line-up.

WATERGATE – Everybody loves it! Everybody is going (…we think?)

For the past month Red Bull Music Academy Radio has been broadcasting live from Wrangelstrasse with a Berlin special. And to the all-conquering brand’s credit, they’ve provided a really impressive showcase of various artists, promoters, labels, and music heads from Berlin. This Sonntag, they wrap things up with Signal 03 at Watergate, and sweet mother of Merkel they’re going out with a bang. For starters – Moodymann is on the bill. Which would be an event in itself. Throw in DJ Koze. Oh ja, no big deal. Add Falty DL and locals Spencer (Numbers), Resom and La Fleur. It’s ridiculous – and starts at 6pm, if turning up to work on Monday is your vibe.

GOLDEN GATE – Bron loves it! And is going, natürlich!

This wochenende it’s all about einen schönen Sonntag, and by schön I really mean wild, when you throw Golden Gate into the mix. Once we’ve had a stint at Watergate we’ll be heading over to the rough and ready Jannowitzbrücke stalwart, for Garden Matters – a night of (in one of the organisers own words) “vinyl only depravity”. Sounds deliciously vicious. Jeopardising your chances of making it to work on Monday will be Matthew BurtonJordan Rothlein, Olofsson, TLK and The Buff Dance’s Preesh Mendez, who will be making his final Berlin appearance for a while. Come down, get busy to a mostly house flavour and see the sun rise over the Spree. It makes all the sense.

PRIVAT CLUB – Everybody loves it! Everybody is going!

I’ve been hanging out for this release. Kyson – the Berlin-based Australian with a penchant for luscious beats – has just released his debut full length on Friends of Friends The Water’s Way, and it’s a dreamy wintery treat to say the least. So very many layers of lovely. This Montag, see his work showcased at Privatclub where Jian and his band will be performing live. They’re supported by local, Holy Machines. Lucy and I will be there – likely front left – embracing the emotion and quite possibly weeping into our rot wein. Come say hi.

PANORAMA BAR/LAB.ORATORY – Bron loves it! Is going!

Feeling the need for a quiet woche following a likely weekend of madness? That might need to be put on hold. It’s the night before Tag der Deutschen Einheit (Reunification Day), and Berlin is encouraging you to let your hair down. With what I think might be the DE’s last holiday before the silly season, there’s an extra juicy offering this midweek and amongst all the clubs who will be opening their doors the highlight goes to Berghain – well Pbar and Lab if we’re being precise. The latter of which, me and the rest of Berlin’s females won’t be attending. It’s a separate entrance affair – with Arttu (live), Ben UFO & Tama Sumo, ItaloJohnson and Mano Le Tough in PBar (more than enough really!) and Optimo, Akirahawks, Roger 23 and Massimiliano Pagliara providing the tunes for the male-only sector.

UPDATE: As our new old mate has kindly pointed out (thanks Ingo!), the femmes are in fact WELCOMED into Lab tonight. The separate entry gist remains, however it’ll be a fellas AND ladies ‘crossover dance party’ in the usual home of fetish. Pick your flavour.

About BRON

Bron writes on all things techno. If there's a party at the club, she is probably there - with fiddy and all the gang. She also likes gluten free bread (because she can't eat wheat) and wine.
