What’s Up Weekend? 24 – 30 October 2013

What's up Weekend?

I have asked my mate Bron to give us a round-up of what’s going on in Berlin each week. Allowing us all to machen die Party. I’m not very techno-techno-techno – but Berlin is, and so is your mate Bron. Each event is either highlighted with a:

Bron loves it! – more electronic, than not.
Lucy loves it! – more indie boy band/ pop vibes/ not techno.
Everyone loves it! – 2.5 words: shit’s ACE.

We have moved What’s Up Weekend to Thursday, as all this weekend disco really puts us on the back foot for a Wednesday deadline. So here are your go-to’s for the week ahead.

**DISCLAIMER: these aren’t the only discos that are going on – they are just the ones that stand out.

PRINCE CHARLES – Bron loves it!

For an electro pop start to your weekend, Prince Charles is your ticket this eve where Israel’s, The Young Professionals (or TYP), will be performing live in celebration of their new single (and surrounding project), ‘Fuck Off Berlin’. While it sounds a tad ballsy coming here for a gig with a title like that, it seems this is in fact an ode to the Haupstadt, with an accompanying short film full of dreamy weird Berlin summer scenes and a remix single featuring Oliver Deutschmann and Snuff Crew. Joining them tonight will be Discodromo (Cocktail D’Amore) and Wawashi DJ (Hard Ton). Fun fact – their lead singer is also a judge on Israel’s X Factor. Mate! FREE ENTRY.

STATTBAD – Bron loves it!

Throughout the 90s Berlin’s !K7 released a series of compilations – X Mix – which paired techno mixes from names like Laurent Garnier, Richie Hawtin, Dave Clarke and John Acquaviva with a stream of computer animated video. While I was far too young to rave back then, my memory of computers around 1993 (when the first compilation was released) is of a black & white classic Mac that struggled to run Dark Castle. I think we can safely assume these mixes were ahead of ze times. Tonight sees the first of their 20th anniversary celebrations with a video installation from artists Pussykrew (seen at this’s week Boiler Room) and sets from John Acquaviva (from X-Mix 1994), Derek Plaslaiko, Hrdvision and Marius Reisser. This will all take place in the abandoned pool glory of Stattbad. Watch this space for the next edition, coming in late Nov.

URBAN SPREE – Everybody loves it!

Well, hihi, fresh from performances at Poland’s Unsound Festival James Ferraro and copeland (aka Inga Copeland, formerly of Hype Williams fame) are in Berlin and this Sat they’re leading a Hippos in Tanks label night at mulit-purpose wonderland, Urban Spree. Other than a preview of James’ new album NYC, HELL 3:00 AM, I’m not really sure what you can expect here – which I think is part of the lure? The night will be presented by no fear of pop, UnReal and CTM – a pretty decent stamp of approval alone. DJ sets from no fear of pop and the UnReaL crew.

STATTBAD – Bron loves it!

It’s two outta two this wochenende, with our tip being that you get back on the ring/U8 for another ideal offering at Wedding’s Stattbad. Tonight, it’s a house and techno mixed bag with Mike Dehnert– in his first gig as a Stattbad resident -, Cosmin TRG and Fresh Meat in one room and Acid PauliMaayan Nidam and Maik Gyver in the other. Oh and while you’re at it, try out this new Mate they’re stocking – shit’s LECKER. Etwas für alles.

BERGHAIN/PANORAMABAR – Bron loves it! And is going!

The Berlin Marathon takes place this weekend and it has nothing to do with 42.195km of bitumen. It’s one of those “how the hell do they manage this?” kinda affairs with: ShedDJ HellFunctionBen KlockDanny Tenaglia (in his FIRST German appearance – seriously!!), Marcel DettmannAnthony ParasoleAnswer Code Request (live) – downstairs. Mike HuckabyRyan Elliott, Danny Tenaglia (again – bitte), Tama SumoVolcovLakuti and Sadar Bahar – in Pbar. Carbo-loading recommended, supportive shoes essential.

PANORAMA BAR – Everybody loves it! Everybody is going!

Polymorphism is a concert slash club series put on by the team behind CTM, and much like the festival, focusses on artists with a slight left of centre slant. Tonight it’s all fancy footwork and genre-blending with Slava (Software), Nguzunguzu (Fade to Mind) and Lotic (Scifi & Fantasy) being the stars of this round. We’re particularly looking forward to checking out Slava showcase this year’s Raw Solutions, and Nguzunguzu’s preview of upcoming release Skycell (did we mention we’ve also learnt how to pronounce their name? Huzzah!).

WATERGATE – Bron loves it!

What are the chances – there are actually two parties we’re vibing this Mittwoch abend, shit’s verruckt! For a more housey flavour, we suggest heading over to Falckensteinstraße 49 where Jay Shepheard‘s Retrofit will be throwing a label party at Watergate. Joining their head honcho on the waterfloor will be San SodaMic Newman and Yooj – and all signs point to this one kicking on well past your school night bedtime. A little mid week waterfront escalation – oh go on.

About BRON

Bron writes on all things techno. If there's a party at the club, she is probably there - with fiddy and all the gang. She also likes gluten free bread (because she can't eat wheat) and wine.
