What’s Up Weekend? 19 – 25 June 2013

What's up Weekend?I have asked my mate Bron to give us a round-up of what’s going on in Berlin each week. Allowing us all to machen die Party. I’m not very techno-techno-techno – but Berlin is, and so is your mate Bron. Each event is either highlighted with a:

Bron loves it! – more electronic, than not.
Lucy loves it! – more indie boy band/ pop vibes/ not techno.
Everyone loves it! – 2.5 words: shit’s ACE.

Here are your go-to’s for the week ahead.

**DISCLAIMER: these aren’t the only discos that are going on – they are just the ones that stand out.

MICHELBERGER HOTEL – Lucy loves it, because the Ponies love it.
Remember Travis? Yeah we didn’t either. But old mate is back with an album and is playing at the Michelberger, outside, in the sun with Mighty Oaks – for free…. WITH A BBQ. OK – I don’t know if this is your thing, but the Michelberger is a sweet spot, the sun is doin’ a bit at the moment and free meats is never not good. If you don’t have shit to do and wanna celebrate this insane weather – hit that, and let the good times roll!

VARIOUS – Fête de la Musique – Everybody loves it, everybody will probably get involved in one way or another

Kicking off on in France on June 21st 1982 as a free celebration of musical diversity, this fest has grown into a global celebration of all this musique, with their number crunchers telling us it has now expanded to 520 cities worldwide, (41 in Deutschland). Shit’s large scale. Here in Berlin, we’re talking 19 years of frei events, celebratory vibes and high fives to togetherness, and this year is no different. Getting involved in one way or another we’ve got techno at Tresor, the T-Room Sessions at Prince Charles (with a Brandt Brauer Frick DJ-Set, Oliver Deutschmann and fresh air), a Badeschiff Open Air (not free – must’ve missed the memo), a mostly local flavour at Sage Restaurant/Fiese Remise and perhaps the one I’m most excited about, an indoor/outdoor Blockparty at Gretchen. That Gretchen number is pretty mega with Machine Drum, Soundstream, Skream, Peak & Swift, Session Victim, Para One, Jan Driver b2b D.I.M., Djedjotronic b2b Strip Steve , Deadbeat vs. Paul Fowler, and Eddie C & The Mole. Pretty much everything listed here is free (seriously!) and nearly all outdoors. If it rains, we’re all screwed.

PARTY OBSESSED PEOPLE (ex Flamingo) – Everybody loves it! Everyone is going, Bron is unaware of this.

This Friday is Berlin Midsommar.. Do you know what this means cornflakes – it means flowers in ones hair, maypole dancing, Scandinavian music and baben Modern Day Vikings all in the one place. Each year the team over at Nordic by Nature brings this wonderful tradition to Berlin, with the help of all sorts of Nordic themed bands and companies. This time – we are getting our ears around one of our fav femmes CTM, Dinner, Iberia, Aves and SO MANY MORE. This is free – it starts at 4P and goes til the wee hours – the weather in Berlin is bloody glorious at the moment. If you don’t go, I will actually question your intelligence.

MAUERPARK – Everyone loves it! It’s SUMMER!

Throwing even more Frei into Freitag, everyone’s mates Red Bull are throwing a pretty impressive ‘hangout’ over at Mauerpark. Genau, again, this one’s kostenlos. It’s a generous wochenende! Usually most musically known for epic Sunday singalongs a la bearpit karaoke, tonight the wall park sees a Modeselektor curated line-up of Sick Girls, Siriusmo, Buraka Som Sistema and german tongue-twisters Schlachthofbronx do their thing.

CSD GAY & LESBIAN PARADE – Everyone loves it!

Now in it’s 21st year, Christopher Street Day is an annual demonstration for  the rights of gays, lesbians, transgenders and bisexuals. Regardless of your flavour, this parade from Kurfürstendamm/Joachimstaler Straße to Brandenburg Gate on this sunny Saturday should be a great chance to get involved in marching for rights that should be standard as well as what sounds like one hell of partay. It might be a stretch, but with it’s floats and colour this is also probably the closest we’ll get to the infamous 90s/00s Love Parade which swam in a sea of latex, fur and flesh. Unfortunately a midrif bearing Papa Sven is unlikely, but you can’t have it all.

GRETCHEN – Everyone loves it! Everyone is goinggggg to discoo!

We’re pretty amped about this one, and if you haven’t already got all over it, we’ve got tickets up for grabs – for you (one of you) and a mate. Off the back of a pretty  deliciously dancey new LP Half of Where You Live, Gold Panda is taking to Gretchen like a moth to a flame – and he’s bringing some pretty solid mates with. This night is gonna get your ears all over Luke Abbott, one of Lucy’s firm favourites  and so many more. If you are keen to win tickets, you have until midday Friday to enter our comp. If you simply wanna go – a ticket is gonna set your back 15€’ish. Holllllllller.

SHAKE – Bron loves it!

Another new venue in a wacky space, Berlin – control yourself. This time we’re talking a circus tent in a disused railway yard at Postbahnhof, which sounds a fair bit like a horror setting that ends in being stalked by Pennywise the Dancing Clown. However, Coulrophobiacs fear not (and whatever you do don’t follow that last link), as Odd Fantastic are throwing Auntie Flo (Huntleys & Palmers, Kompakt), Young Marco (Rush Hour, ESP Institute) and Moomin (Smallville, Closer) in the mix to raise hands, not hairs. With an additional lounge tent and Jamaican BBQ outside, all signs are pointing to a whole lot of feel good and happy vibes.

FESTSAAL KREUZBERGLucy loves it, might go.

Lil B, AKA “The BasedGod” is here in Berlin for Creamcake. If you are a bit tired of all the techno vibes that have been coming out of Berlin recently – look no further than this get low hip hop action. Having made over 3000 songs since 2006 (seriously?!), you can’t say the great man isn’t giving this thing called life  a solid  crack. Tooted as the FUTURE of hip hop, the Godfather of rap, a preacher of peace, love and harmony –  I’m drinking that kool-aid, don’t know about you.

About BRON

Bron writes on all things techno. If there's a party at the club, she is probably there - with fiddy and all the gang. She also likes gluten free bread (because she can't eat wheat) and wine.
