It’s these kinds of weekends that we hang onto during the dark depths of sub-zero despair, that make suffering through ridiculous winters completely worth it. Yep, it’s summer solstice and Berlin’s really tapping into those lengthy daylight hours. Free parties, Scandinavian babes, flowers, more free parties, a maypole, free tickets, outdoor vibes, too many DJs, too many dancefloors, more babes. We’re far too excited – meet you on most of these dancefloors!
This week we are still giving things away, thanks to the lovely team over at Nutcase Helmets. If you still don’t know who Nutcase is – you need to do a better job of paying attention, but I will go through it again. Nutcase make helmets for your heads. Nice helmets for your head. What this does is it keeps your brain safe when you’re navigating the streets among cars, people and other moving objects that get in your way along the asphalt. Brain safety is much like safe sex and/ or wearing a seat belt – a very real thing.
Riding your bike from disco to disco, at night, tiddley (idiots) is bigger than the blog and not something we keen on tackling – but we are able to negotiate it. Welcome our Nutcase Helmet giveaway. Winning is dead easy, all you have to do is the following:
- Give us your details through the Facebook page
- And you’ll go in the running.
It is actually the easiest thing you will do today, probably. Sort your life out.
Below are some of the events we are recommending for the week ahead in Berlin. Each of them is either highlighted with a:
Bron loves it! – more electronic, than not.
Lucy loves it! – more indie boy band/ pop vibes/ not techno.
Everyone loves it! – 2.5 words: shit’s ACE
***DISCLAIMER: these aren’t the only discos that are going on – they are just the ones that stand out.
URBAN SPREE – BERLIN MIDSOMMAR FESTIVAL – Everybody loves it (obviously – it’s Scandinavian)
Get ready to dance around a pole in a “non-slutty fashion” (thank you, Lucy) – Berlin Midsommar is here! Run by those sweet femmes at Nordic by Nature, this is the pinnacle of their jam-packed calendar of do’s, and now in it’s 4th year they’ve more than mastered the art of celebrating the summer solstice Scandi style. Sample life from the better-looking regions of the world with music from Sandra Kolstadt, Summer Heart, Blaue Blume, Pooma and more alongside some pretty cute activities – maypole dancing, a paper chase (amazing!), tug of war and our absolute favourite – make your own flower wreath. Think garden princess. You need one of these. Kicking off at 16:00, our tip is to get their early. There are plenty of limited goodies (including flowers and bags from Kauf Dich Glücklich) which won’t last throughout the eve. And it’s totally FREE!!
PANORAMA BAR – Bron loves it!
Urgh, this right here is quite a treat. Amongst a totally bonkers list of Freitag abend d-floor choices, we’ll be heading to Pbar for two of our favourites in the house and techno world, Levon Vincent and Roman Flügel, joining the also awesome Soundstream and Robert-Johnson resident Thomas Hammann (in what we think is only his second Berlin appearance?). This has the potential to be awesome from start-to-finish, wear your dancing shoes.
Also worth checking out:
MAUERPARK – Everybody loves it!
Continuing on with the kostenlos/frei/gratis theme is this ridiculousness at Mauerpark. Tying in with Fête de la Musique (see below), Red Bull Music Academy are putting on one hell of a stage, which includes Caribou’s first live show in Germany in drei whole Jahren. Oh hihi! Dan Snaith and co will be joined by the femme behind one of our fave releases of 2013, Jessy Lanza, footwork maestro DJ Spinn & Taso and local favourites Brandt, Brauer, Frick feat. Beaver Sheppard. AND: Not in Berlin, or don’t like crowds? Let RBMA Radio treat your ears via the world wide web. All of this will kick off at 16:00 (CEST). Tune in over here:
Embrace that festival feeling – wherever you are in the world.
VARIOUS – FETE DE LA MUSIQUE – Everybody loves it!
More free events? CAN’T HANDLE! And this one’s on a global scale. Kicking off on in France in 1982 as a free celebration of musical diversity, Fête de la Musique has grown into a worldwide party held annually on Summer Solstice (June 21st), with their number crunchers telling us that in 2013 this expanded to 520 cities worldwide, (41 in Deutschland). Shit’s large scale. Berlin is obviously well into this, and loads of clubs are getting involved with free events, throughout both Tag and Nacht, showcasing music for all tastes. A few highlights include the RBMA Stage (obvs), Gretchen’s Block Party w/ Emika, Jazzanova & KRTS, Else, Renate’s & OYE’s Party w/ Max Graef, Brandt Brauer Frick, Telephones & Eddie C, Boys Noize Records at Ipse (they’ll also be stopping to show the game) and Tresor w/ Trus’Me (also free – all night. Never been to Tresor? Here’s a good opp!).

RUMMELSBURG – Bron loves it!
Oh hallo summer feelings! Nothing screams Berlin sommer vibes like a water-side open air, and as we mentioned earlier in the week, Watergate’s open air season, FLY-Watergate, is back and ready to wrap you up those ideal emotions. This Sonntag sees the first of fünf (FÜNF!) parties at Rummelsburg – a pretty magical garden on the banks of the Spree – with Life & Death hosting their crew and some good amigos for the season opener. Over two stages catch John Talabot, Tale of Us, Ame (live), DJ Tennis, Mind Against, Christian Löffler (live), Thugfucker AND MORE – they’re too good to us! Kicking off at midday and running until 22:00, we suggest making a day of it and cycling out there, because nothing beats a Sunday cycle with friends, oder? We also recommend getting tickets in advance, or as promised:
Thanks to the lovely crew at Watergate we have 2×2 tickets to giveaway!! Yep! And it’s totally einfach to enter too, just head to our Facebook page, hit this comp tab, and follow the steps. You have until Samstag 17:00 to enter. Get cracking!
