What’s Up Weekend? 18 – 24 July 2013

What's Up Weekend? Anything?I have asked my mate Bron to give us a round-up of what’s going on in Berlin each week. Allowing us all to machen die Party. I’m not very techno-techno-techno – but Berlin is, and so is your mate Bron. Each event is either highlighted with a:

Bron loves it! – more electronic, than not.
Lucy loves it! – more indie boy band/ pop vibes/ not techno.
Everyone loves it! – 2.5 words: shit’s ACE.

We missed Wednesday – again. Fear not, next week we’re back on track. Versprechen. Here are your go-to’s for the week ahead.

**DISCLAIMER: these aren’t the only discos that are going on – they are just the ones that stand out.

MELT (Friday – Sunday) – Everybody’s going, no one’s actually in Berlin!

Ok, so this isn’t quite Berlin, but this is where we’ll be this weekend and we’re pretty damn aufgeregt about the whole affair. We’re talking three days of music and camping, epic former mining vastness, a lake, a sunny forecast and a ridiculous line up of acts with both electronic and indie leanings. Our kinda package deal! Bron’s eyeing off James Holden, DJ Koze, another round of The Knife’s wacky dance recital, Atoms for Peace, Zebra Katz, finally seeing Purity Ring, and some of the usual reliable late night players  like Dettman, Klock, Ben UFO, Joy O, Function, any of the Innervisions fam and whoever’s on the Sleepless Floor for Früstück. Lucy’s vibing MS MR (always, always, always), DJ Koze, DIIV, CHVRCHES ugh – and so MANY MORE.

Although when it comes down to it, we’re pretty keen to go with the flow – you can’t really put a foot wrong at Ferropollis.

There’ll be no branching off the trusted path this week, with your Freitag at Berghain & Pbar once again being the one. Drawcards  include a whole host of talent downstairs with things getting a little left of centre and I wanna say dramatic? Enough of my word vomit – you’ll be wanting to check out Demdike Stare (live), Prurient (live), Akkord (live), Randall DJ set (we’re talking Metalheadz alumn here), Opium Hum and Huerco S. Upstairs, shit’s a little lighter with Tiger & Woods (live), Gerd Janson, Discodromo and Ostgut darling Steffi. Thank fuck it’s Freitag with two floors of goodness.

THE CLUB – Everybody loves it!

It was love at first gif and for the past 6 months we haven’t stopped kicking ourselves for not thinking of something so brilliant first. Hell, who we kidding – When You Live in Berlin is far more genius than we’ll ever be. Tonight join in celebrating 6 months of the site that paired Berlinisms that you could never quite articulate with killer gifs, resulting in one of our fave tumblrs on ze web. ACTUAL LOLZ, jeden freakin tag. Head to Neukölln’s The Club for a banging bash complete with tunes (c/o Joey Hansom and Jackee Word), the key ingredient to any great Freitag knees up – Our / Berlin vodka (flowing freely for the Frühaufsteher) – and your favourite gifs on loop. Submit your votes… it’s a bloody tough call, but this will forever hold a place in my heart and for Lucy? This is is it, right here.

NATION OF GONDWANA (Saturday – Sunday) – Bron loves it!

The annual house and techno temporary paradise returns to Grünefeld this wochenende for 40 hours of non-stop escapism and See-side lovin’. With a list of regulars returning year after year, the festivities really kick off Saturday afternoon and this year’s line-up includes Beda, Gerd Janson. Der Dritte Raum (live), Joel Mull, Cari Lekebusch, Alex.Do, Monika Kruse, Dominik Eulberg, Mano Le Tough, Sven Dohse, a lake, swimming, camping, market stalls and a mostly Deutsch feel good time. Get amongst it, get a little wild?

Our friends over at Sweat Lodge are throwing a party at Chalet this Saturday, and you’re invited! Making the most of what looks like another killer weekend of sunny days and balmy nights, they’re kicking things off  in the garden with a BBQ (and damn, they know how to grill) and Elie Eidelman (JackOff) going b2b with Jack Haighton (Hotflush). As the sun goes down they’ll move indoors with agency players Sasse aka Freestyle Man (Moodmusic), Joel Alter (Bass Culture / Kontra Musik), Dairmount (Room With A View) and Qzen (Permanent Vacation) all doing their thing.

Renate’s new open air space this weekend hosts Cómeme for a label takeover and daytime hand raiser – and if that forecast isn’t full of shit, your Sunday is looking bloody sunny. This could be Perfekt.  Highlights for the day include head honcho and giver of live  energetic treats Matias Aguayo along with label mates BarntPhilipp Gorbachev (live), Djs Pareja and viel mehr. From 10am – 10pm, and with a Renate after party to follow, 24 hour party people rejoice.

Ok this week is manic – but it’s getting good. Do you want to know why? I’ll tell you. Your mate Hawkon is playing Berlin today at Urban Spree; I’m going, Bron’s going – and 1 of you is also going, with a friend – for free. Gah! The giving continues to continue! I don’t know how aware you are about my love for old mate Hawkon, and to be fair I have only heard two songs. But it rages pretty deep. From when I last wrote there still seems to be very little info about our mysterious Norwegian/ London hybrid, but I feel like a good bit of mystery is the start to every epic love story, right?! Doors are at 9, tickets are 7€. SEE YOU THERE.

About BRON

Bron writes on all things techno. If there's a party at the club, she is probably there - with fiddy and all the gang. She also likes gluten free bread (because she can't eat wheat) and wine.
