What’s Up Weekend? 17 – 23 October 2013

What's up Weekend

I have asked my mate Bron to give us a round-up of what’s going on in Berlin each week. Allowing us all to machen die Party. I’m not very techno-techno-techno – but Berlin is, and so is your mate Bron. Each event is either highlighted with a:

Bron loves it! – more electronic, than not.
Lucy loves it! – more indie boy band/ pop vibes/ not techno.
Everyone loves it! – 2.5 words: shit’s ACE.

We have moved What’s Up Weekend to Thursday, as all this weekend disco really puts us on the back foot for a Wednesday deadline. So here are your go-to’s for the week ahead.

**DISCLAIMER: these aren’t the only discos that are going on – they are just the ones that stand out.

KANTINE AM BERGHAIN – Bron loves it!

Tonight we’ll be heading to Berghain’s cozier little sister – the Kantine out the back – for the first Berlin edition of Eine Nacht Mit, the DE equivalent of London’s unique A Night With series. As with the original, Eine Nacht Mit will give free range to one DJ for the entire 8 hour shift, allowing us to go in all sorts of musical directions with whoever’s behind the wheel. Kicking things off will be will Berlin-based, Life and Death head honcho DJ Tennis, who’s eclectic style will surely bring all sorts of surprises to your Donnerstag abend. This will be the first of monthly parties – watch this space for upcoming installments.

KAUFHAUS JANDORF – Everybody loves it!

We’re mixing things up this Freitag and getting a more visual hit of cultcha c/o the opening night of A Twist in my Sobriety – an independent photography and installation exhibition taking place at Kaufhaus Jandorf. Continuing over the rest of the weekend, the exhibition will showcase work from 9 artists including Lisa Wassmann, Herr Müller, Valquire Veljkovic und mehr – with their works themed to how our public lives are portrayed in various media. It’s also a great chance to check out another interesting disused Berlin space being given new life – former department store turned creative canvas Kaufhaus Jandorf. Opening night kicks off at 7pm.

Curators of all things feel good and UK house/disco, Futureboogie, return to our favourite ramshackle house party for what looks set to be a 15 hour boogie marathon. Riding off the back of a few recent delicious releases and with a general knack for party making in their repertoire, this should be a great chance to see this popular UK crew takeover a venue suited to their hands-in-the-air party style. Haupstadt bound for this round are Crazy P SoundsystemMaxxi SoundsystemChristophe, Lukas and Futureboogie DJs, with a number of local friends joining them too. Bring mates, get down, and disco.

SHIFT – Bron loves it!

Inconspicuously tucked in next to techno powerhouse Tresor, lies Shift – a smallish venue that while pretty new to the Berlin club massive (less than a year we think?) seems to be hosting more and more drawcard parties. This Sat, the streak continues thanks to a Sex Tags Mania takeover with DJ Fett Burger & DJ Sotofett, the Norwegian brothers (in the the blood not homie sense) behind the label, and friend of the family, Hops. Admittedly I’m yet to make it to a Sex Tags party, however going on glowing reports of an anything goes approach to past affairs, this should be a fun and unpredictable night.

ENGLISH THEATRE BERLIN – Everybody loves it!

Hey mate! It’s Montag. And while Lucy’s still on a beach/by a pool/generally killing it in Bali, we recommend doing something lovely with the start of this week. Enter Australian-bred, Berlin-based, Sophia Exiner aka Phia. I’m pretty new to Phia’s sounds, however her new single ‘Do You Ever‘ has me on board – there’s just something very likeable about her one-woman indie pop thang (and well, sometimes we all need a break from techno). Tonight Phia concludes her DE tour at the English Theatre Berlin and will be joined by fellow AU/DE blend, Mez Medallion. If nothing else, ever wanted to know what an African kalimba sounds like? This is the one.

About BRON

Bron writes on all things techno. If there's a party at the club, she is probably there - with fiddy and all the gang. She also likes gluten free bread (because she can't eat wheat) and wine.
