What’s Up Weekend? 14 – 20 November 2013

I have asked my mate Bron to give us a round-up of what’s going on in Berlin each week. Allowing us all to machen die Party. I’m not very techno-techno-techno – but Berlin is, and so is your mate Bron. Each event is either highlighted with a:

Bron loves it! – more electronic, than not.
Lucy loves it! – more indie boy band/ pop vibes/ not techno.
Everyone loves it! – 2.5 words: shit’s ACE.

We have moved What’s Up Weekend to Thursday, as all this weekend disco really puts us on the back foot for a Wednesday deadline. So here are your go-to’s for the week ahead.

**DISCLAIMER: these aren’t the only discos that are going on – they are just the ones that stand out.

GRETCHEN – Everybody loves it!

We’ve been waiting quite some time for this one – it’s Ryan Hemsworth, IRL, for what we’re pretty sure is his first appearance on these DE shores. Oh hihi. Touring his debut full length, Guilt Trips (which is full of that familiar sexy vibe) he’s part of a solid bill at Gretchen tonight, which also includes the pretty freakin’ awesome Zebra Katz (if unacquainted, taste this or this), er, Diplo and a Box 2 takeover from local party crew Creamcake feat. UNO’s Gobby and friends. It’s a school night, and there’s about a 2 / 10 chance we’ll make it to class the next AM.

PRINCE CHARLES – Bron loves it!

This Freitag sees the launch of a new Berlin party LOCKED which will focus on showcasing UK artists with perhaps a more house and bass-y flavour. Tapping into the void left by the now closed Horst and wound up Sub:Stance parties, if this edition’s line up is an indicator of things to come, this party should be a good time, für jeder. Round 1 includes Deadboy (Numbers reg, and he of BlaquewerkHeartbreaker and this classic remix fame), Hessle Audio/Hemlock up and comer Joe, Berlin-based Palms Trax (recently released ear treat here), Uta, and LOCKED founder Dean Driscoll.

***AND: we got tickets!***

You LOCKED your bike to shitty temporary fencing at Mauepark and broke your only key. Three days later it’s still there, and you manage to free it. Cue victory dance – what are you dancing to?

Eg. I (Bron) would be (and am) dancing to Randomer – Bring. Fist pumps, big strong victory fits pumps.

You have until 1pm Freitag to enter.

FARBFERNSEHER – Bron loves it!

For a more intimate affair, Skalitzer Strasse’s Farbfernseher tonight plays host to a wee Leisure System takeover – from Ireland’s Hubie Davison and Leisure resident, N>E>D. Celebrating the release of Hubie’s newly released EP I Won’t Be There (which is pretty divine – go get all over that), kicking off at 10pm, kicking on until 6am, and having caught Hubie play a nice little taster last night at Privatclub… all signs point to this being a sehr sehr gut time on this cosy dancefloor.

CHESTERS – Everybody loves it!

Continuing on a run of interesting events at Görli nachbarn Chesters, our mates over at no fear of pop are joining forces with Urban Mutations to present a Danse Noire showcase this Sat eve. On board for the night are two artists who have had releases on the Geneva-based label – label co-founder Aïsha Devi (formerly known as Kate Wax) and Italian producer Daniele Mana aka Vaghe Stelle. Both performing live, they’ll also be joined by Lorenzo Senni as Stargate. With also sorts of sounds between them, we’re expecting this one to be a musical mixed bag (from pop to techno and all sorts of experimenting in between). Rounding things out are DJ sets by Urban Mutations, NFOP, and Danse Noire.

PRINCE CHARLES – Bron loves it!

We’re back at Prince Charles for the second night in a row. Which a) could be due to their drink der woche (Raspberry Caipirinha – oh ja, bitte) but b) is far more likely due to the first EU  label night from Deepblak -the Oakland and Berlin label headed by AYBEE. Joining the main man (who will be performing live) are Afrikan Sciences and Damon Bell, who are both celebrating recent releases on the label. And if you’d like a double-dose of their deep house cross anything blend, all three are taking over Bass Cadet the night before too.

About BRON

Bron writes on all things techno. If there's a party at the club, she is probably there - with fiddy and all the gang. She also likes gluten free bread (because she can't eat wheat) and wine.
