What’s Up Weekend? 12 – 18 September 2013

What's up Weekend?

I have asked my mate Bron to give us a round-up of what’s going on in Berlin each week. Allowing us all to machen die Party. I’m not very techno-techno-techno – but Berlin is, and so is your mate Bron. Each event is either highlighted with a:

Bron loves it! – more electronic, than not.
Lucy loves it! – more indie boy band/ pop vibes/ not techno.
Everyone loves it! – 2.5 words: shit’s ACE.

We have moved What’s Up Weekend to Thursday, as all this weekend disco really puts us on the back foot for a Wednesday deadline. So here are your go-to’s for the week ahead.

**DISCLAIMER: these aren’t the only discos that are going on – they are just the ones that stand out.

Probably one of the best reasons I’ve come across to book a Friday off work this year, Berghain tonight hosts Promote Diversity, a party to end all parties in protest of Russia’s anti-homosexual law. A series of club nights under the same name are being held worldwide and all door proceeds will go towards All Out – a global organisation running campaigns to  to support LGBT rights. With Berghain’s event hosting 40+ names, this is easily one of the most special offerings of the year and artists on board include the majority of the Ostgut Ton roster (Ben, Marcel, Tama, Nick, Andy, Norman, Steffi, Virginia, Boris, et al), Rødhåd, Portable, Paula Temple, Aerea Negrot, Ellen Allien, Seth Troxler and a bucketloads more. Concert from 9pm, tickets available in advance.

PRINCE CHARLES – Bron loves it!

Your mates down at The T Room Sessions are pulling out the big guns this Freitag with a big fat 80s special. I’m not sure if this means strictly 80s classics, but I sure as hell hope so. Some excess synth to kickstart the weekend. JA BITTE. Selectors for the evening include Derek Plaslaiko, Quell & June and the Sweat Lodge team of Elie Eidelman, James Blonde and Eliza. Free entry before 11pm, BBQ and an alfresco setting. Shoulder pads optional.

LOOPHOLE – Bron loves it!

Following a bonkers time spent at Dimensions Festival this week just past, I’m entering this wochenende on a self-imposed party Pause. However… this is only 300m down the road from my Wohnung, so that doesn’t really count, right? Loophole – a pretty fitting name and multi purpose event space in Neukölln that I hadn’t noticed (neither in person or online) until this event popped up, plays host to John Swing and EMG who are celebrating their release, Relative 011. Now I don’t know a whole about these two locals, however the former threw us a pretty lecker RA podcast earlier this year and well, they’re promising old school house, techno, rare funk AND experimental sounds – it’s an ideal local mixed bag. See you on Boddinstrasse.

CHESTERS – Bron loves it!

Meanwhile, down by Görli, Objekt & Call Super are joining forces to bring Kreuzberg a neu nacht, ‘Everything is True’. The first in what promises to be an ongoing thang, I’m big upping this one for the combination of cosy vibes (Chesters is one small room – has a nice friends of friends feel) and the promise of a genre-hopping free for all from the two adopted Berliners. And you know how we like to keep it fresh. I also like the flyer – I’m simple, shoot me.

SAMSTAG/SONNTAG/(and let’s face it) MONTAG

I try to mix it up, I really do. But you can’t fight greatness – and for the majority of this weekend (I’m counting Thursday), the good stuff is once again waiting for you on the border of Friedrichshain and Kreuzberg. Plus – Marcel Dettman is celebrating a new release – it’d be rude not to join him. Downstairs, joining the main man are Shifted, DJ Pete, Ø [Phase], Francois X, Gerd Janson and Byetone (live). While on the smaller floor, Noze (live), Marc Schneider, Margaret Dygas, Nick Höppner and Chile’s numero uno Dinky do their thing.

://ABOUT BLANK – Bron loves it!

://about blank – one of Friedrichshain’s best big kids’ playgrounds – joins forces this Sonntag with the crew behind the former Horst Krzbrg to throw an “orgiastisch-hedonistische get together” – ://about horst. Quite frankly neither my Deutsch nor Google Translate’s is good enough to really interpret what’s going on in that event blurb, however what I can determine is that: a) this line up is pretty delicious – Dense & Pika (live) (hotflush), Move D (source), Axel Boman (pampa), Elisabeth (leaves) and more, b) it starts at midday and runs for a 19 hour-ish, c) there’s something about a bus and a ‘Hostory of Berlin’ – I’m not sure if that’s metaphorical or an actual bus ride, I’m hoping the latter. I’m convinced – get all over the Sonntag escalation vibes.

About BRON

Bron writes on all things techno. If there's a party at the club, she is probably there - with fiddy and all the gang. She also likes gluten free bread (because she can't eat wheat) and wine.
