What’s Up Weekend? 12 – 18 December

I have asked my mate Bron to give us a round-up of what’s going on in Berlin each week. Allowing us all to machen die Party. I’m not very techno-techno-techno – but Berlin is, and so is your mate Bron. Each event is either highlighted with a:

Bron loves it! – more electronic, than not.
Lucy loves it! – more indie boy band/ pop vibes/ not techno.
Everyone loves it! – 2.5 words: shit’s ACE.

We have moved What’s Up Weekend to Thursday, as all this weekend disco really puts us on the back foot for a Wednesday deadline. So here are your go-to’s for the week ahead.

**DISCLAIMER: these aren’t the only discos that are going on – they are just the ones that stand out.

GENDARMENMARKT – Everybody loves it – and everyone should all join in!

In the spirit of Christmas and in lieu of a Lucy VERIFIED for December, we bring you Lucy vs. the Christmas Party – just another excuse to drink warm booze with good peeps really. If you haven’t yet experienced the magic of the Gendarmenmarkt Weichnachtsmarkt – you should! It’s fairytale-esque, has a variety of Würste, gluhwein (obvs), classic DE christmas crafts and a hella big Tannenbaum – all in the middle of some epic old buildings (eg. Deutscher Dom and Konzerthaus). Fitting into the after-work drinks slot, we’ll be meeting there around 7pm and would love you to join! Christmas attire encouraged as is kicking on with us at one of the following dance floors.

Ohhhh HIHI. It’s a Freitag, it’s the silly season, and it’s Leisure System’s 20th party at Berghain – things are about to get next level. Continuing their string of banging parties, this 20th round will see another credible musical smorgasbord of fine selectors paired with a crowd with a penchant for partying. Entertaining the main floor massive will be Paul Woolford in his German-debut as Special Request (find me front left, losing my marbles), Leeds’ Kommune1 in his Berlin-debut (live), experimental stalwart Tim Exile (live), South Laandan grime master Visionist, and locals and Leisure residents Barker and N>E>D. Upstairs – Finest Friday, with the also enticing offering of Kassem Mosse (live), Simian Mobile Disco, DJ Spider, Dakini9 and Resom. It’s an ideal musical mixed bag, wear your dancing shoes.

URBAN SPREE – Bron loves it!

Continuing with the milestone theme, perennial party makers Shameless/Limitless will be celebrating their 5th birthday with a shindog across two floors of Urban Spree. Quite the achievement in the ever-changing Berlinersphere I’d say. Joining them with live performances will be Touchy Mob + Friends, Femminielli Noir and Jaako Eino Kalevi, with DJ sets from Matt Didemus (Junior Boys), Molly Nilsson, Friendboy and noch mehr.

STATTBAD – Bron loves it!

Belly full-o street fare (see Bite Club below)? Burn that off in Wedding where Stattbad is looking musically lecker this Samstag eve/Sonntag morgen. It’ll be a mixed house and techno affair in the pool (if you’re new to Stattbad, that’s an actual, empty swimming pool) with Detroit shining star Kyle Hall, Amsterdam duo Detroit Swindle and Berlin’s own musical maestro Sven Weisemann. Downstairs, things go more techno-techno, with Lucy, Roman Lindau, Viktoria Rebeka and Andrejko. Besides a killer offering, it’s also Stattbad’s last dance for the year – go and show your love for a club that’s provided an exciting season of parties in in 2013.

URBAN SPREE – Everybody loves it!

Like your Christmas market fare a little less Bratwürst-y and a little more seasonally sassy? Bite Club have you sorted, with a two-day festive streetfood market at Urban Spree. After a busy debut season of bring foodie delights to Berlin on a Friday eve, this special seasonal round will take place from 14:00 – 22:00 this Sat and Sund, and damnnnn we’re in for a treat. Highlights include: outdoor food trucks and stalls (festively themed), an indoor foodie gift market (cheese, cake, cookbooks – ja, bitte), Xmas nail art (you’ll find me here), hot drinks a plenty and even an oyster & Bloody Mary bar. Musically – the Ensemble Mini and Home Opera will be doing performances on each evening, and there’s also ‘Bad Santa’s DJ Grotto’ (I’m intrigued). Follow the link below for the full epicurean line-up, and see you there – ARRIVE HUNGRY.

Alles gute zum Geburtstag Berghain! The Friedrichshain main player turns nine this wochenende and you’re all invited (well if you get in, let’s be realistic now). Entering it’s pre-teens in the finest of ruckus-causing fashions, Berghain will play host to DVS1, Tadeo, Ben Klock, Silent Servant, Marcel Dettmann, Kangding Ray (live), Randomer und mehr. Bonkers enough already, if Pbar’s your vibe, get all over (deep breath): Molly, KiNK (live), Leon Vynehall, Gerd Janson, nd_baumeckerJohn Talabot, Axel BomanHunee + yup, even more. There better  be cake and lolly bags, you’ll be needing your sugars.

DAS GIFT – Everybody loves it!

Woah Woah Woah, Pies Pies Pies. Yup, it’s another food-centred event in What’s Up Weekend this week and for good reason too – it’s the silly season, and there are mother farking home made pies, yo! Pioneers – the lovely folk who bake pies, and deliver them to your door – will be throwing their second Pie Night at Das Gift, following a super popular first edition. They’ll be showcasing their range of pies, vegetarian pasties and chutneys as well as debuting their special Christmas selections – the Turkey and Stuffing combo sounds particular ideal. Kicking off at 20:00, we’d recommend getting there early – these bad boys are popular.

**AND: Wanna win pies? Seriously. Head over to Lucy’s Christmas Wishlist PART 2, where you could win the Pieoneers’ Christmas Hamper.

Got the next day off work, funemployed or don’t care for productivity/functioning on Mondays? All signs point to this Sunday do at Renate being a ridiculously good time. Following a party with an almost identical line-up this time last year, Return returns with Ricardo Villalobos, Soul Capsule, Zip, Steve Bug, Dan Ghenacia, Apollonia, Dorian Paic, Binh and Evan Baggs (on a Sunday, yeah I know, right!). On top of the impressive line-up you’ll find the usual multi-storey-house-party-with-mates vibe and quite possibly confetti. If you’re going to go out on a Sonntag – do it properly.
