What’s Up Weekend? 10 – 16 October 2013

What's Up Weekend? Anything?

I have asked my mate Bron to give us a round-up of what’s going on in Berlin each week. Allowing us all to machen die Party. I’m not very techno-techno-techno – but Berlin is, and so is your mate Bron. Each event is either highlighted with a:

Bron loves it! – more electronic, than not.
Lucy loves it! – more indie boy band/ pop vibes/ not techno.
Everyone loves it! – 2.5 words: shit’s ACE.

We have moved What’s Up Weekend to Thursday, as all this weekend disco really puts us on the back foot for a Wednesday deadline. So here are your go-to’s for the week ahead.

**DISCLAIMER: these aren’t the only discos that are going on – they are just the ones that stand out.

KANTINE AM BERGHAIN  – Everybody loves it! We wish we were going!

I was pretty slow to jump on the Deptford Goth bandwagon – some things just slip past you, you know? Anyway, got there, and glad I did. ‘Life After Defo’ (Daniel Woolhouse’s debut full length) is my kinda gut wrenching bliss (*in moderation, let’s not get too forlorn). Tonight we get the chance to see this IRL, with Daniel and band making their Berlin debut. Expect some emotion to be stirred – in a good way.

There’s etwas für alles this Freitag at the Friedrichshain mainplayer. Ahead of CTM Festival’s 15th edition this January, they’re kicking things off with a teaser ‘prelude’ and setting the pace in style with Factory Floor along for the ride. For some, this is likely a deal maker alone however to really get more bang for your buck they’re joined by East India Youth (live), Hyetal (live), Reliq (live), Innen+Aussen and Opium Hum. Upstairs? It’s a Dekmantel takeover, and the Dutch powerhouse have invited Juju & Jordash (live), Anthony Naples, Vakula, Virginia and Casper Tielrooij & Thomas Martojo to do their thang. It’s a pretty ideal double whammy. Note the earlier start time for the CTM arm (9pm) and €20 ticket. Midnight onwards is your standard €12.

For a more house and disco flavour, your best bet this eve is to head over to Renate where Homopatik mainstay Mr. Ties will be joined by Hard Ton (live), Discodromo, Daniel Wang, The Rimshooters, host Paramida and noch mehr. My bet is that this will be a whole lot of fun – and well, it’s Renate, so you’ve got the whole messy ramshackle houseparty thing going on too. Grab some mates and wrap yourselves in feel good.

STATTBAD – Bron loves it!

We return to Wedding for the second weekend in a row, and good Gott it’s for good reason. R&S records are celebrating their whopping 30th birthday (seriously mates!) and are joining forces with Dollop to mark the occasion with one a ridiculous bash at Stattbad. Let’s hope the pool is opened for this one – with Nathan Fake (live), Space Dimension Controller (live), Boddika, Tessela, Paula Temple, Synkro and R&S and Dollop DJs, making this the 30th to end all 30ths. Your could bring them a present, I hear they like VIBES.

BERGHAIN/PANORAMA BAR – Bron loves it! Bron is going!

You know those weekends, that we suggest spending more time in Berghain than your own bed? Let’s just leave this Innervisions – Lost in a Moment offering here. RødhådRecondite (live), Zenker Brothers, Petar Dundov (live), Truncate, Luke HessAlex.Do, Inigo Kennedy, Marcel FenglerSandrien. Panorama Bar – Levon VincentDixon, Ame (live) + DJ-set, Gerd Jansonnd_baumeckerHenrik Schwarz (live), Matthew DekayDeetronAril Brikha (live), Acid Maria, Thomas Hammann. I start German school on Monday – wünscht mir Glück.

PRINCE CHARLES – Bron loves it! Hopefully going!

This is a special one. Local crew, JAW, are joining forces with the Steve Reid Foundation (lead by Gilles Peterson) to throw a big schön Sonntag soiree, ‘Free Spirits’, in aid of two special causes. Funds raised will go to both the Steve Reid Foundation  and helping much-loved local venue Festsaal Kreuzberg with its reconstruction. The former being formed in tribute to legendary musician Steve Reid, with the purpose of helping other struggling musicians in need. Then musically, we’re in for a treat, with Gilles Peterson joined by Floating Points, Four Tet, Alex Barck and two live ensembles to take your Sonntag down a soulful path – Horace Tapscott Memorial Ensemble and Astral Travel. Kicking off at 3pm, this should be a lovely way to wind up your weekend.

BI NUU – Bron loves it! Quite likely going!

Combat your likely weekend hangover this Tues, with the help of Washed Out who is in town and touring his new album ‘Paracosm’. And while heading down a rockier path than ‘Within and Without’ (one of my core summer albums since release in 2011), it’s still all very soothing and should be an ideal way to spend this school night. Find me by the back left bar, melting into my rot wein.

About BRON

Bron writes on all things techno. If there's a party at the club, she is probably there - with fiddy and all the gang. She also likes gluten free bread (because she can't eat wheat) and wine.
