What’s Up Weekend? 10 – 16 July 2013

What it is Weekend?I have asked my mate Bron to give us a round-up of what’s going on in Berlin each week. Allowing us all to machen die Party. I’m not very techno-techno-techno – but Berlin is, and so is your mate Bron. Each event is either highlighted with a:

Bron loves it! – more electronic, than not.
Lucy loves it! – more indie boy band/ pop vibes/ not techno.
Everyone loves it! – 2.5 words: shit’s ACE.

Here are your go-to’s for the week ahead.

**DISCLAIMER: these aren’t the only discos that are going on – they are just the ones that stand out.

GRETCHEN – Everybody loves it!

If you’ve perused our musings more than once you’ll know we’re partial to sexy low-slung vibes, anything that encourages a grind, a slowed down drop. This week we’re prepping our cores and our asses for the all-encompassing deliciousness of Kaytranada, who’s saucy beats make us feel a whole lot more badass than we’ll ever be. We’re looking forward to bopping along to his addictive new track for Bromance along with lots of satisfaction from the Canadian’s pretty divine release from earlier this year (Kaytra to Do). He’s joined by Sarah Farina and resident Delfonic. Meet me down low.

As far as bill’s at Renate go, this is a pretty big one and if I was you – you being a fan of techno and a little school night rebellion – I’d get all over this. Ben Klock tonight takes to Renate and that ramshackle multi-storey block will surely get a satisfying pounding. Herr Klock’s in pretty fine company with Ryan Elliott, Tama Sumo and The Mole also in the house to make your Freitag a nightmare. Embrace escalation.

What Feel Festival’s teaser vid tells me is that this little fest on the outskirts of Berlin (ok, I’ll give it to you Brandenburg) is all about sunset frockling and getting sensual with flowers in a dreamy wheat-field, with presumably a soundtrack of sweet beats. Even if that full scenario doesn’t play out, there are still a lot of draw-cards to win you over. Firstly, it’s a mostly local flavour and amongst the admittedly English speaking circles we (that’s Lucy & I) roll in, I kinda like the idea of going to see a handful of acts the country (/wo)men get all up and around. It’s also all very upbeat, with an indie pop meets feel good house vibe, it’s close-ish (totally manageable), and on a See in no man’s farmland which is kinda pretty. Live acts and DJs that might float your boat include: The/Das (live), Vierkanttretlager, Kid Simius, Soukie&Windish, Claptone, Kiki, I Heart Sharks, Housemeister, Claire, You and Alex, Ben Mono, No One’s Head, Creed and Stone, Yooj and a good 50 or so other names to ensure it’s a sleepless affair. 1, 2 or 3 days, this could be the little out-of-towner you need.

BERGHAIN/PANORAMA BAR  – Everybody loves it! Everybody is going! Meet us for a cocktail at John Muir beforehand!!!

After five years of epic parties that brought dubstep (and later broader strains of bass) to Berghain, Sub:Stance winds up it’s twice-yearly residency this Friday with it’s 18th and final fling. The offering is a suitably large scale send-off to the Sub:Stance legacy with a whole host of memorable players from the past  parties along for the ride. We’ve got, (deep breath) Appleblim, Dillinja, George FitzGerald, Headhunter, John Osborn, Marcus Intalex, Martyn, ND_Baumecker, Peverelist, Roska, Scuba, Shackleton, Trevino, Will Saul and Wookie. Viel Glück managing your set times, you’ll find me running up and down those stairs.

FREUDENREICH – Bron loves it! Might be going!

We like to mix things up on our wochenendes and this Sat we’re vibing heading south to this little Sonnenallee outlier for the launch of SPACEMOUNTAIN. I’m going to start with ‘hidden absinth bar’ and keep you locked in with basement houseparty vibes deep in Neukölln (it’s local, yo!) and promise of a musical mixed bag to tick all sorts of boxes (House/ Techno/ Garage/ Afrobeat/ Disco/ Wu-Tang – ja, bittte). Sorry whaaaat, did somebody say afrobeat?? Selectors for the evening include Brisbanite Berliners Strange Forces (Dj set), Ramchez and the SPACEMOUNTAIN team of Billy Elliot & Grumble. Come for the absinth, stay for the good times.

RUMMELSBURG – Bron loves it!

Ibiza meets the the German house fan this Sonntag with Rummelsburg hosting a Watergate x Ciroloco mega Air.  Rich in big names and hand raising bangers, this double whammy sees the likes of Maceo Plex, Pan-Pot, Art Department, dOP, The Martinez Brothers, Catz N Dogz and Sebo K do their thang (and that’s a good thang), in the daytime, on inland Germany’s answer to a beach. The people will love it. Prediction – sunburn.

About BRON

Bron writes on all things techno. If there's a party at the club, she is probably there - with fiddy and all the gang. She also likes gluten free bread (because she can't eat wheat) and wine.
