What’s Up Weekend? 05 – 11 December

I have asked my mate Bron to give us a round-up of what’s going on in Berlin each week. Allowing us all to machen die Party. I’m not very techno-techno-techno – but Berlin is, and so is your mate Bron. Each event is either highlighted with a:

Bron loves it! – more electronic, than not.
Lucy loves it! – more indie boy band/ pop vibes/ not techno.
Everyone loves it! – 2.5 words: shit’s ACE.

We have moved What’s Up Weekend to Thursday, as all this weekend disco really puts us on the back foot for a Wednesday deadline. So here are your go-to’s for the week ahead.

**DISCLAIMER: these aren’t the only discos that are going on – they are just the ones that stand out.

BANJA LUKA – Bron loves it!

In what looks to be an ongoing thang, Cat Crew debuts this Thursday at Banja Luka – that bar/biergarten that’s inconspicuously tucked into the corner of Schlesi & Falckenstein strasses. Worth checking out for trinken purposes alone, Cat Crew are taking Banja to the next level and throwing a partay. And while the guest for the debut hasn’t been officially announced, with Rush Hour and Delsin mentioned (and, well, take a gander at the event wall) it looks like we’ll be seeing British Berliner BNJMN lead the charge. A brand new live set from BNJMN for only €3? Semi-ludicrous, we’re in.

KANTINE AM BERGHAIN – Bron loves it!

Not so techno-techno, or need a techno Pause? Then Certain People 16 at Kantine am Berghain might be your ticket this eve. The night will feature lovable London lyricist, Ghostpoet, who this year released his second album (the tongue-twisting – Some Say I So I Say Light) and is all sorts of engaging live. He’ll be joined by VV Brown, a powerful songstress, touring a new album The Apple, who I’ve just been intro’d too but I get the feeling could bowl you over with those vocals live. And, Fenech-Soler, who are ridiculously popular and while not quite my thang, could for sure be yours if you’re into a fun electro-pop flavour. Tickets available at the door, doors at 20:00. That’s 8pm – it’s an early one folks.

Extending to a 12 hour session, friends along for the ride include Chateau Flight, Iron Curtis (live), Matthias Vogt, Benjamin Fröhlich (Permanent Vacation), Jack Haighton, T Room’s own Elie Eidelman, Dean Driscoll , Gene Siewing, Yooj and noch mehr. RICHARDPLATZ – Everybody loves it!

Hot off our short tour of East Germany’s best Weihnachtsmarkts (Lucy’s recap coming soon, taste a visual sample over here), one of my top shout outs this weekend goes to the Rixdorfer Weihnachtsmarkt – where magic happens, Leute. If there’s one thing I love as much hitting ze clubs, it’s getting wrapped up in the spirit of Christmas, which is exactly what you’ll get here. Gluhwein, Würste, little handmade toys and Christmas decorations, carols, lanterns, cute old Germans and more gluhwein. Entry is free, and it’s only open this weekend. Go on, get enchanted.

FREUDENREICH – Bron loves it!

Taking us once again on an intergalactic journey into the unknown is Spacemountain,  which returns to Freudenreich for a third edition this Samstag. Keeping with their anything-goes, let’s-just-have-a-ball-yeah vibe, this round will see residents Grumble and Heavy Breather, joined by Lobster Theremin’s Palms Trax. If you’ve followed What’s Up Weekend over the last month or so, you’ll already know that the Berlin resident is: a) is killing it and b) has released a fine EP in the form of Equation. Not stopping there, they’ll also be joined by Dimininal, who’ll be doing a live set (get all over this) and Desmonde Fontane, who I don’t know much about but damn that’s a good name. On top of all the musical mayhem, there’s the usual absinthe bar and wacky underground lures – think an even more twisted Renate vibe.

AND!!! To celebrate this trip into Space, our friends over at Spacemountain have kindly given us a copy of Palms Trax’s Equation EP to give away. Which is extra bonkers given it’s totally SOLD OUT. To win? Head over to Lucy’s Christmas Wishlist PART 1, and follow ze instructions. Comp closes Sunday, 17:00.

MONARCH – Everybody loves it!

Wanna know your Bergens from your Stavangers? US TOO. Representing all good northern things, our friends at Nordic by Nature are throwing a party at Monarch this Tues, and it’ll be an all-Bergen education, Bergen being Norway’s second largest city and we’re told, a hot bed of musical talent. Your showcase for the eve? Hawkon, Put Your Hands Up For Neo-Tokyo (accoustic set), Pastor (Untz Untz Records) and Nordic by Nature DJs. Entry is FREE but you’ll need to sign up via guestlist@nbnberlin.de. Scandi AND kostenlos – Christmas has come early!

About BRON

Bron writes on all things techno. If there's a party at the club, she is probably there - with fiddy and all the gang. She also likes gluten free bread (because she can't eat wheat) and wine.
