We’ve given you a playlist, the chance to win a totes fancy overnight stay or even some of Our/Berlin’s fine fine wodka, now continue on with that lovin’ feeling and get all over one of many Valentine’s events in Berlin. Loved up or not, this weekend is packed with all sorts of alles – from flamboyant rap madness to a three-day modern classical affair. And if all else fails, there’s always vodka. Once again, brought to the good people of the Haupstadt by Our/Berlin. Romantic wodka kisses X
Below are some of the events we are recommending for the week ahead in Berlin. Each of them is either highlighted with a:
Bron loves it! – more electronic, than not.
Lucy loves it! – more indie boy band/ pop vibes/ not techno.
Everyone loves it! – 2.5 words: shit’s ACE.
***DISCLAIMER: these aren’t the only discos that are going on – they are just the ones that stand out.
ST. JOHANNES EVANGELIST CHURCH – Everybody loves it!
Now this right here sounds like heaven, with only a few days left of Berlinale, Berlin Film Society are celebrating their two year anniversary with a screening of Marcel Carné’s 1945 film ‘Les Enfants du Paradis‘ (Children of Paradise), ‘one of the greatest tales of tragic love in the history of cinema’ – brace yourselves! In what sounds like it will be a pretty heavenly evening, the screening will be preceded by a complimentary Lillet apéritif upon arrival with French canapés and quiches. Sehr fancy! French wine and accompanying cheeses will also be available, provided by Berlin’s first French wine shop, La Cave de Bacchus. I’m dying. Oh and the night will take place in a really really old church in Mitte. It all sounds divine, and is only €12 (canapes, apéritif, english subtitles and romantic setting included). Got someone to impress? This is the one.
URBAN SPREE – Bron loves it!
Meanwhile in a completely different but awesome realm, local party makers UnReal are getting all up in your Valentines grill with #gHashtag at over at Urban Spree. Joining them will be New York lyricist and all-round party-starter, Cakes Da Killa, who by all accounts is all sorts of madness live (try a taster, over here or his latest release I Run This Club – hectic, in a really good way). He’ll be joined by Berlin locals black cracker, BlackBlackGold, Tom Ass and xorzyzt. I predict a saucy one.
MONARCH – Everybody loves it!
Fancy an early concert, some post-work tunes? Something live with a dreamy-rock-pop flavour? Well hihi, this could well be your ticket, with Italian/Canadian His Clancyness playing Kotti’s Monarch this Freitag abend. Tbh we know very little about this cat, however our friends over at no fear of pop are supporting this one and they tend to have pretty excellent taste in music. So we’re going with that/them. They’ll be kicking things off with a dj set from 7pm, and Clancy will treat your ears from 8pm.
BERGHAIN – Bron loves it!
Not into any of the above or want to move far far away from anything even remotely Valentine’s Day themed? This killer night at Berghain and Pbar might be your vibe. Livity Sound are making their Berlin debut (as a trio) , with both live and dj sets. Woaaaaah shit, Berghain explodes. They’ll be joined by Positive Centre (live), Paul Spymania and Fiedel. Upstairs on the smaller floor, Finest Friday will see Tensnake, Kim Ann Foxman, Radio Slave and the great man, Gerd Janson, doing housier thangs. Pack your ear plugs.
FREITAG – SONNTAG
VOLKSBRÜHNE – Everybody loves it!
Luring us away from sweaty dancefloors and into one of Berlin’s most impressive theatres this weekend is Stargaze Presents, a three-night sit-down affair combining modern classical and pop music. Each night will include three concerts, with the final of the three being a different artist’s interpretation of Terry Riley piece ‘In C’. With an exciting list of names on board (including Nils Frahm, Pantha du Prince & the Bell Laboratory, Holy Other, Mouse on Mars, Tyondai Braxton and Stargaze’s own ensemble) the festival looks like it will be a great chance to see more familiar names performing interesting pieces outside of their own work, AND if, like me, you don’t know as much as you’d like to about modern classical music, a great introduction to more musicians. This all sounds bloody lovely, and even if only for one of the nights, a pretty special night out. Treat someone, or yourself.
