Hipster Essentials (AKA the Best of 2011, for arseholes)

I have been avoiding putting together a list of 2011 – but after a 2 week hiatus, I feel like that might be a nice little intro back into the bloggy-woggy world.

So, I familiarized myself with 8tracks, and got this done. ALORS – here are my top numbers from 2011 (read on suckers)

M83 – Intro (feat. Zola Jesus) : Both total winners of 2011. M83 makes my skin tingle, and Zola Jesus’ voice is so glorious, I would like to bottle it, and just let it go when some sort of adversity has been overcome.

Friends – I’m His Girl : Friends is sexy without even trying. Whether it be by way of a 90’s cover or other, I want Friends to be my friends. And we will laugh, and drink in bars – and wonder why we were never sexy together prior to that moment.

Young Empires – Enter Through the Sun : Dancey as all get out, this what was up towards the end of 2011. Would kind of like more than one song in future – but at the end of the day beggars can’t be choosers, and I am just happy to have one nouveau number from Young Empires – especially when it makes me feel this good.

1,2,3 – Heat Lightening : Hey babe. Slow dance with me? Maybe we could be in some hot and bothered locale – in a car park with a couple of beers in brown bags, it would be night time – and it’s just you and me. That is this song. And it’s f*cking marvelous.

Theme Park – Milk : England. You sound so god damn sweet when you sing. Especially when this shit is bouncy, and you sing talk. Oh goodness. You are semi amazing, and by the end of it all I’m just about ready to tattoo your name across my forearm.

Destroyer – Kaputt : Things I love about this song, the sexy sax. Hey-yo, Michael Bolton, could that be you with clever curly hair. Lounge to this, with a mate – or two?

Oliver Tank – Up All Night : If you follow this shiznit –  you know how I feel about the dreamy Oliver Tank. This guy – NEEDS TO STOP, being so dreamy. There is something about a male paired with music which just makes me a little crazy, of the girl variety – where I’ll photo shop your and my head in wedding pics (I haven’t done this, yet). I just might for you, Oliver.

The Drums – Money (Beat Connection remix) : Enter Beat Connection. I love the original of this song regardless but Beat Connection – Marry me. Not a question, ORDER. If you collectively said you wanted to buy me something, but you didn’t have any money – I’d probably say “Whatever, play the song again” M8.

Alex Winston – Velvet Elvis (RAC remix) : “When I feel your velvet I can’t help it” This song is all sorts of wrong but right. I want to feel Elvis’ and not help it. I don’t even know who Elvis is – but I like it. And bless RAC for making this song the thing I want to dance to, on the reg.

Blithe Field – Peach Plum Pear (Joanna Newsom) : I don’t really know what it is about this song, but I continue to think it’s delightful. You don’t get much music that moves you to delight. This does. It’s light, sweet and just all round fabulous. Don’t fight it.

How to Dress Well – Suicide Dream 3 : This is just skin tingling beautiful. My coworker thinks How to Dress Well is boring. That guy, can get fucked (no offense n’ Chip) – seriously, I can just sit and dissolve to this. Like – melt to the floor. Hey there, I’m a puddle – what up?

Purity Ring – Ungirthed : It may also be the film clip for this – that just makes this all the more magical. That irratic sound and then that femme voice being all cute and envious for those of us that can’t really sing. Gotta say I love the womps as well. But who doesn’t.

WU LYF – Dirt : these are my guys of 2011. Like, love them. Like have no idea what they are saying when they sing – but give a shit. You boys complete me. Don’t care that you are probably 18 years old, and completely inappropriate for me to pursue. You really made my year. Thanks.

Convaire – Troy : Australian’s all let us rejoice for we are young and free! That is this, summed up in one chatty/ singy effort. It totally reminds me of beach holidays, the sun, sand, not surf – because I don’t surf, but maybe the waves? And just a happy little existence in Summer Australia. Makes sense, as these kids are from Syd. Go Australia. Bunch of winners.

Washed Out – Eyes be Closed : Major for 2011. Dreamy and totally major. This is the sort of magic I wish I would encounter daily but I seem to forget about it because I’m A.D.D. like that. Swoon on, forever.

Gotye – Somebody that I Used to Know (feat. Kimbra) : Gotye is IT. Like – This is it, this time I know it’s the real thing, I can’t explain what I am feeling (Thank you Dannii Minogue). It makes my knees weak, whilst sitting. Quite the feat. The fact that in the recording he sounds much the same in real life, like – BLOWS MY MIND. AUSSIE AUSSIE AUSSIE (oi, oi, oi)

Metronomy – The Bay : The whole Metronomy album was epic. Like HEAVY epic. Like put it in my pocket and contend for my friendship epic. This song makes my feet move, my brain want a champagne, and some sort of party to start. Don’t stop/ won’t stop, meaning continue.

Jamie XX/ Gil Scott Heron – NY is Killing Me : There is very little I can say about this duo but SWOON. Jamie XX makes me want to do cart wheels across the dance floor. And Gil Scott-Heron (Rest in Peace) is so fabulously dark, it’s intoxicating.

IS TROPICAL – Lies : The video for this is brilliant. This band is brilliant. And no one really knows what they look like. It’s all a bit fab. Lies feels like a night out in London, of the few that I have had – they have been messy, drunk, on a bus, and for the better half spent in a fish and chip/ kebab shop. #winning. Meanwhile – anyone that calls it “sexy time” is a mate for life.

Crystal Fighters – Champion Sound : The swift guitar sounds in this song, makes it all the better. Feelings, because I don’t know any other way. It reminds me of this one time when I was in Guatemala (not even making this up) and we went to a club/ bar with salsa’ish music. That is what this reminds me of. A hot night in Guatemala, dancing with locals, getting giddy on whatever horrible beverage 20 year old me thought was good at the time.

Nite Jewel – Am I Real (Classixx remix) : UGHHHH – Classixx’s are so goddamn clever. Serenade me once, twice, a thousand times. On the same level as RAC – they are just so on point with anything and everything of the music variety. Put a fork in me, I’m done.

Bring on 2012? yesyesyesyes.
