There’s one thing any day over 20 degrees calls for, and that’s a beer. Kick off the Summer season with an ice-cold brew and say “Prost!” at one of Berlin’s finest beer gardens. Here are five we’ll be going to.
CAFÉ AM NEUEN SEE | Lichtensteinallee 2, Tiergarten
You’ll most likely find yourself at Tiergarten at some point this summer whether it be for a walk in nature, some respite from the Ku’damm chaos or when you’re showing visitors the biggest inner city park. While you’re there, we highly recommend making your way to Café Am Neuen See. It’s a café and beer garden situated on a small lake where you can hire tug-boats, drink beer and grab a bite all at the same time.
PRATERGARTEN | Kastanianallee 7-9, Prenzlauer Berg
The beer gardens must surely rank along side happy hour, two for one cocktails and the pairing of sausages in bread with ketchup as one of humankind’s greatest achievements. In Berlin, one of the cities greatest, and most popular, city beer gardens is Prater. For when the sun is shining, the evening is sweaty or you have friends visiting, Prater puts on a top show offering up a good range of German beers, and traditional German food – both restaurant and canteen styles.
GRÜNEWALDTURM | Havelchaussee 61, Wilmersdorf
One day, some friends and I caught a bus to Grünewald Forest, wanting to find a nice walking trail. We set Google Maps to Grünewaldturm or Grünewald Tower, and hoped for the best. When we arrived, we found ourselves at a huge tower 200m away from a lake. We were curious and explored further, happily stumbling on a beer garden, café and restaurant just behind the tower. Did we go on that walk? Nup.
BOOTSVERLEIH AM PLÖTZENSEE | Norduferstr 23, Wedding
Seriously, Wedding gets better every week. And this beer garden is the tipping factor. Located on a long lake, Bootsy (affectionately named by yours truly) is the most relaxing off-the-main-drag kinda open air bar you’ll find. Nothing fancy, but when it’s one with nature, who needs the glitz and glamor. There are paddle boats for hire so come with your bathing suit or at least a change of clothes in case you end bottoms up.
BRAUHAUS RIXDORF | Glasowerstr 27, Neukölln
This brewery and garden in Neukölln will transport you back a couple hundred years with its traditional German facade and furnishings, and lush landscaped garden. Diverse doesn’t even begin to explain the many characters you’ll find at this place, nevertheless, the beer is consistent and worth a glass or two.
